Garlic questions

Can you ever leave them in the ground TOO long? and how do you know when to dig them up? I know I've read when the leaves turn yellow. but do they have to be completely yellow before you dig up the garlic?

I have one in the mix that I noticed was completely dead (the leaves) and I dug up the garlic, but it was super small. I could see the little cloves etc. But the whole size of the garlic was not much bigger than a green onion. So what went wrong?

And do you normally dig them all up at or around the same time (they were all planted at the same time). And if so, how do you store them. I know you need to let them dry first.

How long can I expect for them to stay good? I'd hate to plant all this garlic and then lose most of it, due to not consuming it quick enough. Anyone have any longer term storage successes?
