zuke replant! the right way??

ZUKE REPLANT! THE RIGHT WAY??

OK, I never saw the fly, but the SVBÂs have hit my Zukes. I dealt with the squash bugs by hand picking the bugs and destroying the eggs, but the SVB slipped in there and the first thing I knew the doss was everywhere. Some of the plants died quickly and several, even thought the stem is half chewed away, are still cranking out Zukes. I doused them with BT dust and water mixed and donÂt know what else to do.

NOW THE QUESTION! Our season is long enough for me to plant again and I plan to do that tomorrow. I use containers and I would like advice as to the PROPER WAY to do this to get the jump on the SVBÂs. The only poison I have is Sevin dust. I also have BT dust, and DE. Advice please as to what I can do to defeat the )_(^*(*%_) SVBÂs in this planting, if that is possible.

You really can't defeat them. You can only attempt to keep them under control.

Your best bet is to plant resistant varieties, don't grow them at all, or learn to live with them.

Need more light. Ideally, put a shoplight only an inch away from the tops of plants. I would throw these in the compost pile and start over. The plants that are not soo leggy and not falling over, you could salvage them, but the zuke that are toppling over, i would start over forsure. Fortunately. Zuchinni grows quick, so you dont even need to give it a head start indoors, you could direct sow the seed in the garden, your choice. Either way, dont give up trying! All you need is more light, closer to the plants! A fan kicking on low, blowing at the plants, will also help control height(leggy, falling over seedlings. Also, to make things easier, and prevent problems down the road. Do NOT use peat pots, or pellets, or anything that can wick moisture from the growing medium. It makes things difficult. Long story short, just dont use them. Buy a normal plastic seed starting tray. I picked up a tray for about 160 plants(very small individual cells) for $4. 1st priority: more light 2nd priority: get rid of those peat pots, get normal plastic seed trays everyone uses 3rd priority: a light blowing fan After that, you'll be growing like a pro! The reason(s) amending of soils in small areas is counterproductive do not vary with the type of soil. Sandy, silty or clay-like, it makes no difference. You do not want to install plants in pockets, strips or zones of one soil texture surrounded by soil of a different texture, as this sets them up for likely problems with how water moves into and out of the soil around their roots. In the case of plants to be left in place for many years (or indefinitely) without lifting and re-planting there is no point in incorporating organic soil texture modification materials (bark, compost, peat...) even if the bed is large enough to minimize or eliminate water movement problems for most of the plants - once the amendments decompose the effects they produce will be lost. Inorganic amendments like perlite and sand do not decompose but enormous amounts of these have to be added to change a heavy soil into a light one. And if too much is added then a droughty and infertile (leaching) situation may be produced, that may be more limiting than a heavy clay-like soil. The most straightforward approach is to choose plants adapted to the existing soil type and plant these in wide, shallow holes dug out of that, loosening it over a wide area beforehand and mulching well afterward. The most satisfactory mulch for woody plants appears to be clean wood chips. If arborist wood chips available nearby tend to have bramble stem sections or other undesirable material mixed in then play chips from a local dealer may be the best bet. Ones we obtain here as cedar play chips are very nice but have become quite pricey, as far as it goes.

It is absolutely a biggie for me too. It has been too wet and rainy here for weeks and weeks. It was warm enough but too wet, so the little zukes would just rot on the vine. Finally we are getting some much needed sunshine and no rain, so the happy squash plants have really grown in one week's time and are beginning to produce fruit. Happy me! I picked my first 2 little zukes yesterday with attached blossoms. I have always had a great garden with tons of squash to eat, freeze, give away and even sell. Then we had a drought for ten years and a severe drought for two years with record breaking high temperatures and fires. Ponds, lakes and rivers dried up. Farmers and ranchers statewide had to sell off their livestock as the stock ponds went dry and there was no hay. We were very fortunate that our well did not dry up. I could not water enough in 120+ degree weather. I finally just mowed everything down and cut back all my shrubs and mulched deeply to try to save my plants and trees. Then the drought finally ended and the weather was the exact opposite - too much rain and very cool summer temps well into July. I had great broccoli all the way through June! Then it turned hot as heck. Got great okra and melons, but few zukes. The ones I planted last year didn't make at all ! It was too wet for too long and too cool last summer. Then it was too hot and too dry and the poor things went into complete shock and killed over. So these are the first zucchini I have been able to successfully grow in my garden in more than three years. I am very pleased indeed. Congratulations on yours beginning to blossom! ~ sweetannie4u

The kitchen knife did the trick. I cut through halfway and then snapped it off gently. I didn't want to go all the way through with the knife and injure the plant. My wife was thrilled that she got two more today after the first one yesterday. Man they grow fast. Zuchinni, that is :)

I caught one SVB in a butterfly net yesterday and crushed it.

It was a small victory in the grand scheme of things, but it felt VERY good.

Then I inspected my plants and crushed any eggs I found. I can only hope I found them all.

I've read that spraying plants regularly with garlic spray will repel the moths. I went out and sprayed mine with some garlic spray this morning.

If you are willing to use Sevin [liquid preferred], spray the stems and ground beneath well. Avoid spraying the fruits.

Wayne, At last, Thank you. Do you think that if I mix a little of the Sevin dust in the ground around the new seedlings that it would help. I will have to wait to be able to buy the liquid until next check so all I have right now it the dust.

Since they are in containers it would be easy to use a row cover/insect barrier and hand pollinate. That way they can't get to the plant to begin with. And given the derth of pollinators this year, many of us are hand pollinating anyway - better production.

Container potting soil doesn't come with SVB's in it so you don't need to worry about soil larvae. ;)

ole, I know how you feel! I'm busy with veeeery early stage of seedlings... the fourth batch of the season, under summer raw cover, after the three first batches were lost to SVB, when I get these in the ground, they'll go covered as well. Maybe this is an idea for you of an extra protection.

My original squash plantings are under row cover this year and I have been hand-pollinating, which seems to be working to eliminate SVB damage, but has hindered my production in these bush-type squashes (Italian Marrow and Golden Zucchini). I have to recommend the row cover, therefore, considering what SVB has done to me in past seasons. Also, I have resistant varieties of vining squashes growing uncovered - these are Zuchetta Rampicante and Cucuzzi. Both are unscathed. It's the double-pronged approach for me. maybe it can work for you, too.
