picked first zuke

First time growing zucchini. I tried to gently twist off the 10" fruit today and it snapped off the top of the fruit instead of at somewhere on the stem. I thought I did everything right. Is it just a matter of luck to get it to break off just right?

You need to cut it. I cut the stem and gently twist at the same time.

Most of the time zukes are best harvested with a sharp knife. They don't turn loose like crooknecks and straightnecks.

Well the taste was sort of bland, but that happens sometimes with the first tomatoes and we had gotten alot of evening storms as they were ripening, so hopefully the next fruits will have a better flavor. I'm still thanking the heavens for that rain. Everything had gotten so stressed but now is looking quite lush. Now if we can just keep getting those showers so I won't be spending all of my time attached to a water hose. The zukes and squash that I had such a hard time getting established are producing and I love knowing the tomatoes will be coming in on a regular basis now. Whooo Hooo! Finally some payoff...... big blooms and 'maters!

What a lovely, little Mandarinquat. Glad to hear that you liked the flavor of the fruit, at least. I am sure in the future you will become better at judging when the fruit are at peak ripeness to pick. I know being a relative newby with citrus that it is just intimidating trying to pick your first fruit and guessing when it is at the perfect peak for ripeness and flavor. I was that way with my first Nagami Kumquats and Sudachi Mandarin fruit. I left my first Sudachi fruit on a bit long and it was not quite as juicy as it should have been. I admit, I also loved seeing the beautiful fruit hanging on the tree and I hated to pick them off! :D Lol..

When saving seed, I've often plucked off the early peppers, because they were pollinated before I could put up the isolation cages. That was the case again this year. Removing the first peppers stimulates growth, resulting in larger plants & a later - but heavier - yield per plant. I highly recommend the practice for those with a growing season long enough for those later peppers to ripen.

Agree. A good, sharp pocket knife is always handy in the garden for lots of things.

But it is still edible. When you get a chance go back and trim off the stem end that was left on the plant. it will seal off better that way.

The kitchen knife did the trick. I cut through halfway and then snapped it off gently. I didn't want to go all the way through with the knife and injure the plant.

My wife was thrilled that she got two more today after the first one yesterday. Man they grow fast. Zuchinni, that is :)

They do grow fast. And taste best if you pick them young and tender.
