I think my grape tomato is actually Tommy Toes....if that makes a difference.

I don't think 1 gallon is enough. You'd be safer with 3 gallons even for a small tomato.

Black Cherry in an indeterminate and will grow to a considerable size. Go with a five gallon container or larger if you can. Mine is growing in half a whiskey barrel.

It isn't the size of the tomato fruit that matters but the plant growth habit and adult root needs. I'd suggest a 5-gallon container, since Tommy Toe is an indeterminate tomato plant that grows 6-8 feet tall. You'll also need a sturdy support of some kind unless you want it sprawling 6-8 feet at the base of your container!

For fun, I grow a very small tomato plant, Red Robin, in a 1-gallon container for my grandson. It's a determinate with small red cherry tomatoes, about 15-20 per plant. It's a very sturdy plant that grows about a foot tall and is certainly decorative. It could be grown in a flower bed and be right at home.

Im growing many cherry tomatoes in less than a gallon planters here are pics I have more cherry tomatoes than I know what to do with but I do have to water daily.

So Cool!!! I love them!! I'd rather not buy dirt and plant in a gallon container and then have to move up...but...I already have gallon containers.

I'll have to see what I can find over the weekend. I was wondering if these would grow up some kind of trellis...you've answered my question!

I bought a grape tomato in a hanging basket years ago. Is there a specific kind to use for a basket? I'm glad I didn't just plant these for hanging from my deck! Could you imagine...lol

Here's a picture of one of my Red Robin tomato plants growing in a 1 gallon container. It has a couple of nearly-ripe cherries:

And here are two Celebrity and one Big Dwarf INDETERMINATES growing in self-watering 5-gallon buckets. They grow only 3-4 feet tall but are heavily laden with unripe fruit so lean all over the place, even when tied to stakes and the deck railing! And a few spring onions struggling around the edges -- we've eaten most of them. Those are aeration tubes running through the middle of the containers.

The three in the second picture are DETERMINATES, not indeterminates like your two varieties. Yours will get a LOT bigger!

I can only reiterate what anney has said so well. The plants you named are indeterminate varieties - big, vining, 6-8 foot plants. The plants shown in all the pics above are determinates - bush, dwarf, and compact plants. That is a crucial difference. They really cannot be compared and indeterminate varieties will not grow in a 1 gallon container. They will quickly become root bound and stressed to the point of disease and no production. Check out the Growing Tomatoes forum here (linked on the front page) for all sorts of posts from folks trying to grow in 5 gallon buckets and all the problems they are having. If a 5 gallon is full of problems how good could a 1 gallon possibly be?

We're just trying to save you some wasted work and problems. But you are welcome to try of course. That is the best way to learn for yourself. ;)

The more I'm reading, the more I'm actually considering doing some serious work on a new garden bed. I wasn't expecting to have to do that & really thought these would grow in a smaller space.

I got the seeds in an exchange and never really did research on them. I had excellent germination and the seedlings are doing very well. I may end up with a produce stand in the front yard before this is over!! lol

I now have a few more questions...I think I'll hop over to the tomato forum. This got much more in dept than plopping some beefsteaks in the ground.
