Sunlight for tomatoes

With regards to tomatoes what would you fellow GW guys actually class as sunlight?

I have a big area that the sun shines on all day, in which I am growing tomatoes. However the sun does not directly shine on every individual plant, even though it is still in a well lit area from the sun. For example some tomatoe plants I have grown against a wall, some against a shed etc which stops the sun from shining directly on them. Would you say that being in an area that is lit by the sun is enough? or would you say tomato plants need the sun shining directly on the plants?

Thanks, Mike
