Almost everyone has fences in So. Ca. & what I notice is if it is black, you notice the yard, Hunter Green is good too. Tan & white all you see is fence & don't notice at all what is behind it. A light wrought iron would make your house seem to disappear. If you had black fence you could put a couple of black pots on either side of porch to tie in with fence. if I was decorating the yard I would want colorful but plants that don't get too large. It's a cute house! Might mention how wide & deep the front yard is would be easier for people to come up with good plants for the area. Also which direction is front of house so they can determine how much shade the plants could take!

A 1920s bay area simple stucco home might have had a redwood fence, but that would be expensive today. The house appears modified from its original state, with added porch, but it's hard to tell in such a small photo. A wood fence would be in character, but you should feel free to go with whatever you like best. And by the way, yeah, what's up with the bicycle in the tree?

It occurs to me that since the house does not declare its style the use of materials of other styles would have a difficult time creating a clash.

That could be taken one step further by actually using materials of a particular style to assign a particular style to the house.

The closest house style would probably be 'Craftsman' this is an eclectic style and so almost any fence would look right although something simple but well made would be my choice.

This house is missing any of the elements that would classify it as a true Craftsman style but from the exterior, it does fit the broad description of the "bungalow style". These are modestly sized, one to one and half story homes built in the early part of the 20th century and are generally characterized by a low roof pitch, often wide overhangs and porches supported by columns, and dormers. But there are as many variables to this style as there are homeowners so it is very much a vernacular American architecture associated with middle America's middle class.

About the most distinctive element of this style is the scale - both in size and aesthetics. These were smaller scale, modest homes built for families with modest incomes. Nothing too showy or flashy and decorative elements were kept to a minimum (there's the exception with the true Craftsman style). A fence that mirrors these same qualities regardless of specific style would be appropriate. FWIW, the picket fence is kind of a traditional add-on to many bungalow/cottage-y style homes.

I have a reproduction of a book published in the 1920's called small houses. Picket fences were shown, but they had all kinds of different picket styles. Picket with a nice arch and gate. White seemed to be the predominate color.

I would have to agree with tibs. White to accent the trim of the house; and an arching detail to accent the arch of the porch. Good Luck!

One thing being left out is the function of the fence. Is it for privacy, security, safety, to screen a negative view, aesthetic accent,....?

As this seems to be another 'drive by' what about a fence made from bicycle wheels or frames?

I still maintain that many of the seeming drive-bys are started by those who check to have automatic email responses sent to them. If that "feature" isn't working, they're clueless as to any responses.

Perhaps those of you who routinely provide assistance to these posts should ponder the merits of responding to any that request a direct email response - those of us who check in at the forum itself, even though largely to lurk, get the benefit of your replies - though the intended target apparently does not.

Ink, you reminded me of a farm near the landfill in the town that I grew up in (Natick, MA). It was a sheep farm called "Bed Spring Farm". All of the fencing was made from "repurposed" bed springs from the landfill.

I don't mean to suggest that the home is not worthy of a nice fence. It is just a memory that I'm compelled to share. It is a nice neat house that should be able to shine with one of several different styles of landscape accessory.

I'd go with the style that personally suits the OP rather than giving too much creedence to the house belonging to a particular style.
