Blood in eggs

This happened the second time in a few weeks and I am concerned. Both time, I was making scrambled eggs, so I don't know if the blood was in the yolk or white. It isn't just the little blood spot you sometimes see. This was pinkish/red all through the white when I cracked the egg. Any ideas here?

I know my egg customers would go nuts if they saw something like this !!!

I see the same thing from time to time. I don't think there's anything you can do about this but maybe someone else will chime in.

It's been so long since I've had store bought eggs, it must happen to them?

Store-bought eggs are candled to weed out any eggs with blood or meat spots. If you are selling eggs, it might be worth your while to invest in a good candler.

Your other option is to try to find the culprit and make chicken soup. You could pen the hens one at a time in a dog crate or the like and check the eggs for several days. Start with the ones you suspect. Next time you encounter such an egg, take particular note of egg colour and shape and any identifying characteristics.

A third idea, if you think your customers are able to handle the realities of life, is to offer a free dozen eggs if they encounter the problem.

I think most people who do not candle eggs are accustomed to breaking them into a cup one at a time -- just in case -- before adding them to whatever they are cooking.

Forgot to mention....I have a baffle but no spooker. Haven't seen Sparrows here in the yard (they hang out at the grocery store and fast food restaurants). I watch for them though. Watch for wrens too, but only have Carolina Wrens. The only birds that hang out much in the backyard are Robins, Woodpeckers, a very noisy Flicker, Titmice, and Thrashers. Later in the summer the Mockingbirds will be back there. OH, and bluejays. Also, squirrels, a raccoon, and a chipmunk. We also have three hawks that live nearby and I see frequently. They worry me the most but don't seem to visit the backyard much...it's easier to pick off the mourning doves in the front yard. If I ever see any sign of a HOSP I'll make sure a baffle goes up. And I watch the birds around here a LOT. Thanks again for asking though. tara

I cannot see the image, either. Try submitting it through www.wunderground.com and then copy the image location once it's approved. You may have to sign up for an account (it's free). Meantime, blood is common. . .from veins around the yolk, to an exploded embryo, it happens (exploded embryo's occur in a fall from a nest, for example). At other times, predation occurs; when a crow, jay, or magpie will steal an egg, eat it and leave the shells. If Elly thinks Mourning Dove, then I am with her.

Perfectly normal to see white spots or red splotches. And it will go away, as moisture from the female bird's feathers will clean them. "Bloodspots on chicken eggs are caused by a rupture of one or more small blood vessels in the yolk follicle at the time of ovulation." However, blood on the wall of the box is a whole 'nother issue. There could have been an altercation of some sort, but usually you will also find some detached feathers from one of the combatants. Are you SURE it isn't berry stains? Are you SURE it wasn't there before? Maybe it's nothing to worry about. Hope not, anyway. And I doubt there is much you could do about that, other than cheering that the bluebird won. Bluebars
