help identifying egg

Hi all,

Yesterday my husband brought a cracked egg shell to me that he found on the cover of our hot tub. Next to the hot tub is a trellis with thick vines of jasmine. Every year there are several birds who nest there. I saw a mocker peeking out from it the other day. I'm in NW Georgia so we are ahead of other areas in regard to first nestings.

This egg was actually just the shell with LOTS of blood in it. It is white and about an inch long so I know it's not a mockingbird egg. We've had some rain and wind but I can't imagine that would dislodge an egg from a nest. Since the embryo wasn't there, I'm wondering if 'something' got into the nest. We have lots of squirrels but I've never known them to do anything like this (I know, just because they haven't in the past doesn't mean they didn't this time).

Any ideas what kind of bird this egg belongs to? Why all the blood? I know that there is some blood when an egg is laid. Not this much, though.

Thanks for your help.

Blessings, Linda...
