Mother is back on the nest - looks like one side of her head near her eye is pecked, but there was no more blood on the eggs when she got up this time. I did have a wren guard on but the birds were so agitated by it that i removed it. Should I put it back on at this point? too late? shoot.

Perfectly normal to see white spots or red splotches. And it will go away, as moisture from the female bird's feathers will clean them.

However, blood on the wall of the box is a whole 'nother issue. There could have been an altercation of some sort, but usually you will also find some detached feathers from one of the combatants. Are you SURE it isn't berry stains? Are you SURE it wasn't there before? Maybe it's nothing to worry about. Hope not, anyway. And I doubt there is much you could do about that, other than cheering that the bluebird won.

Hey, I'm positive that those eggs have blood smears on them and the material on the wall looks like blood. The mother's head clearly looks pecked or otherwise harmed, though her eye looks ok. i'm keeping an eye on everything, beefing up the sparrow spooker, and I do have the wren guard on and the mother is ok with it. Keep your fingers crossed for my girl and her babies.

Anita, please keep us posted and I WILL keep my fingers crossed for your girl. My guess would be that she escaped an attack (from something.... another bird, hawk, cat, etc.) while outside the box. I've seen a few birds over the years with scars from battle wounds that have survived and hopefully she will heal. I would not think this is the work of a HOWR since an adult bluebird would have no problems defending itself from a HOWR.

I'm with BlueBars..... let's cheer her on for winning that battle. And hope she heals quickly.

Anita 3 years ago I opened a TRES box and found what I thought was a dead Mom on her eggs. When I reached in to take her out she flew off (you may remember). There was quite a bit of blood in the nest but she returned and fledged all 5 of her babies. I never did figure out what happened.

Hi Lisa, oh I don't remember that. you must have had the wits scared out of you (that explains it!! evilgrin). I'm glad that your mom was ok and babies too. Mothers are fierce aren't they? My girl seems to be fine (knocking on wood). My husband said that my sparrow spooker looks like something from a space ship now but who cares, as long as it keeps my mamma safe.
