My Duck Abby is sick, but i dont know what she has, HELP!

Hi

I was wondering if anybody onthis board can help me out. I have a pet duck who is less then a year old. up until now she has been pretty healthey. but starting yesterday, she seems to have gotten weak. So weak in fact she didnt do anything when she was attacked by fire ants and until i found her and i removed her from the area. I also had to remove some ants from her eyes. She seems to have difficulty breathing and se even discharged a greenish-brown water from her nostrols. She hasn't eaten or drank much, yet seems to be hungry. She only eats when i give her food through a syringe. At least she still has some stregnth in her, seeing how from time to time she gets up and preens herself.im also worried about her eyes as they are swollen and im worried that she may go blind, Apparently the ants only managed to bite her inner eyelid.

I cant take her to a vet because there is no specialist in my area, they only work on dogs and cats. I am very worried because i love her dearly.

Any help from more experinced hands will be appreciated.

Hi Panthra, I really feel for you, because I know how I have felt in the past when one of my ducks have been sick and I didn't know what to do. What kind of duck is Abby?

It sounds like some kind of infection...has she been around any new ducks lately that might have given her some kind of disease?

I use to have a pekin and she was such a sweet and loving duck. She was sick when she was little and after she grew up she got a bad infection in her leg and it spread all over her body. We even carried her to the vet before it got too bad. We had been giving her tetracycline med. and they told us to continue that, but she passed away one night with her best buddy Troy.

I was heart broken, but there was nothing else we could have done.

I know you said there isn't any vets that see ducks in your area, but maybe you could call one over the phone and talk with them. If you find one and even if it's a few hours away you could still carry her because she's worth it if it will save her little life.

Apple also had gooey stuff coming from her nose and she had yellow gooky stuff running from her eyes; I wiped her eyes and nose out several times each day. She also got to where she was too weak to walk. She would preen herself too, but only as she was sitting down; she couldn't stand up. She use to be a healthy little duck that was very happy that just enjoyed life and being around her duck friends, but all that changed in such a very short time...I miss her so much..

Apple would still eat though..she even had eaten a few hours right before she died... I don't know what to tell you...I hope I haven't scared you with telling you all this about Apple; I'm sure Abby will be alright, maybe you should try to find someone at least who knows about ducks and see if there is any way you could possibly get her to a vet asap. I'd hate to hear something bad happened to her. You really seem like you love her a lot like I love my ducks.. Is Abby your only duck, or do you have more??

I don't know much about ducks, but I have geese. I know geese need to be able to totally submerge their heads in water to clear their nostrils and keep their eyes clean. I suggest you make sure Abby has a nice deep container of water available.

Hi Kath - Thank you for replying. Evidently they are New Zealand mud snails which are harmless to the worms except that they are extremely invasive and will reproduce my the thousand within a week or two. One of the people on another forum had them in her aquarium and she had to clean out her aquarium twice with scalding hot water to get rid of them. She had to boil her rocks, etc. as well. So I have to remove all of my worms and cocoons from the bedding and rinse them off with warm water and then place them in fresh new bedding after thoroughly cleaning my bin and trays with super hot water. The only best way to kill the snails is to drop them and their eggs in salt water. So I figure after I remove my worms and eggs I'll dump all of the bedding and compost into a bucket of salt water and then dispose of it. I hope my worms are just slow like yours. :P Maybe it's just the type I have - I have Indian Blues.

Stop doing for this kid.Stop going to his activities.What I'm about to say(not toward you though)will sound very cold hearted.Stop worrying about him and emotionally protect yourself, his ulcer included.Why is his Father not taking him in for treatment.It is his Father's responsibility.Urge your DH once to take him for ulcer treatment then let it go. Do not give up anymore independence,financial security or your sanity for this kid bc at the end of the day ?The kid will not appreciate it.Sounds to me like juvenile detention would make a nice home for this kid.Along with Psychiatric help.It would take ONCE seeing my kid beat an elderly person I would put his hind end in that detention center so fast his head would spin.He sounds like an endangerment to others and himself. If there is anyway to go back to your chosen profession you should look into that.You have given up way to much.Your DH needs to get this kid into a psychiatrist and perhaps put him in the system before he beats someone(maybe even you)to severe damage or death.

@rina not sure if you're talking to me or the OP. As for what I did, I kept them in a little water bed which is essentially just a wooden frame with plastic around it along with a motor and drain to recycle the water. The plastic pots the plants were in were definitely above the water level, but this wasn't much of a problem since the dirt in the pots seemed to do a good enough job of pulling water up from the water bed using the holes at the bottom. I was just assuming that the OP wanted a more permanent solution for their plant. In which case you can plant it in a water bed built for straight soil, any place with running water, or simply a bucket with soil in it and water maybe an inch or two above the soil line in the bucket. If you go the bucket route, you will need to find a way to remove old water and replace it with new. Use a motor or dump the water once a week and fill it with fresh water from your hose. It's definitely a conversation starting plant. As far as I know it's the only succulent that grows in water.

It's an Echeveria:). What species I don't really know. You are correct that plant definitely has meallybugs. I'm going to guess it's had them for a long time because of all the disfigured leaves. This is very typical from meallybugs. They will infest the center growth and then the plants leaves will have this weird waviness to them. The corking area is scarring. I've seen that happen also. An easy way to get rid of meallybugs is to use rubbing alcohol. With your plant you can get a little spray bottle and put the rubbing alcohol in it, then spray the plant. You can dilute with a little water if you'd like;). Keep out of direct sun while doing this treatment. It can cause your plant to burn. This also applies if you use Yates. Keep treating with rubbing alcohol until they're gone. Check once every 5-7 days. With each time you spray you should see less and less pests;). Eventually when they're gone repot in new mix. Clean the pot real good too. It's important to keep this plant away from other plants. They will spread. I hate them sooo much! Goodluck:). Here's an example of wavy leaves on one of my plants. Not as bad as yours, but I have seen Echeverias that look like yours.

If your duck is still sick, you may want to try giving her some raw minced garlic, start out with 3 cloves every 12 hours. When you mince the garlic, let it sit for about 15 minutes. If it's a bacterial infection this will help it go away. Make sure to keep dosing even after the infection is cleared up, at least for another 2 days. If it's a viral infection, I would get your hands on Echinacea tincture and halve the recommended dose. Mountain Rose Herbs sell excellent tinctures. Hope this helps and is not too late.
