Most likely. You put a pretty toxic mix of various broad-spectrum pesticides on your plants and they're most likely toast depending on how heavy you hit them. Stuff has MCPA and Triclopyr in it (amongst other things). It also has binding agents that help them resist rainfall/water for a little while.

Oh, and if they do survive and haven't started fruiting yet you should be okay eatting the fruit.

However...some would disagree with me on that because of the Triclopyr. If it's of concern you can prune and not eat any of the fruit the plants may produce over the next 30 days and it should be all clear.

Hopefully, you didn't hit the plants too hard and you can keep your plants...g'luck

I'm still think it might be safe to dig em up and start over. I'll wait a few days and see how they do. I didn't hit them very hard though. It was probably 2-3 seconds of a light cover. Still I'm leaning towards gutting the strawberries this week.

What about the rest of the vegetables? Will they be ok if they were close to the berries but didn't get hit? Thankfully most of my plants are still indoors waiting to for it to warm up outside.

It's surprising that home gardeners still use herbicides, especially in areas used by children, such as lawns.

Some ingredients in herbicides (apparently not necessarily the active ingredients) have been shown to cause sexual organ disfigurement in mammals, such as frogs developing both male and female sexual organs (or none at all) and a lot of other unnatural sexual organ development in addition to thyroid malfunctions. (The thyroid is a gland in your throat that regulates certain hormone functions).

Be smart about your own health and that of your children's if for no other reason but that it is costly to go in for repairs....

An alternative to spraying is to make a game with the kids and have them cut and pull the long tap roots of dandelions. My parent did this, and all had a good time. The kids felt useful, plus learned a new skill which many years later remains useful. Pleasant memories of warm spring days cutting and pulling long dandelion roots. But on the other hand, we also treasured dandelion plants for their greens for a neighbor's rabbits and chickens to eat.

And BTW, if spray you must, then there are alternatives to herbicides, such as vinegars. There's also flame weeding, which looks like fun with a flame. The ATTRA web site has lots of information on alternative methods on weed and pest management. Wikipedia has some information on various ingredients in herbicides. Hope this is useful.

Better safe than sorry...toss the strawberry plants and maybe, for this year only, but an already quite grown plant or two from a local nursery.

Top tip my Dad and pops both had different bottles for water and chemicals, all these bottles varied in size, shape and make and colour and then labled them, the chemical ones also has a special locking box for them so that little people (ie. me) couldn't decide to "help out" and water from the wrong ones, keeping us and the veg safe. For instance they didn't go and buy say 3, 1 for fertiliser, one for weed killer, 1 for watering in different colours but the same make, they where all realy different, so that they had several visual clues to which bottle was which.
I am sorry for you loss, its so frustrating! I have 4 year olds too and I wouldn't let them eat them for worry!

You can eat those the dandelions! You can just tell your neighbors that you are growing salad greens ;) If they werent so invasive and darn invasive people would be growing them like marigolds! They really are adorable plants! BUT I feel your pain on trying to get them out of your garden and lawn!!! My neighbor uses this and seems to like it a lot. Hes a organic gardener and his lawn has NO dandelions in it!!!!

JMHO, but if the plants do somehow survive; just take the runners off them and start anew! either way you need to replace the plants, I would just remove these plants and buy some new ones because the poison has been absorbed by the plants and some will be in the fruit it bears, perhaps not much but it will still be there.

Well it's been more than 72 hours and while the plants are still flopping over, some have started to recover and there are some new flowers starting to bud.

My 4 year old understand what happened and she is ok if we dig them up and replace them with flowers. Sad to disappoint her but at least she has something to look forward to!

Now, in regard to dandelions (disclaimer: I am a strongly pro-dandelion person):

1) we can't grow them fast enough. My daughter's guinea pigs want nothing else to eat. Same, I think, for rabbits. So if your daughter is interested in a pet, she could do a thorough weeding herself. Mine does. All you need to say is that she has to pick them in the garden first.

2) I make myself 5 or 6 dandelion salads in April and October. Without going into detail, they sure flush your liver and generally detox you, and that is particularly needed at the end of winter. Dandelion is a major medicinal herb, at its tastiest when it is needed the most. I also make alcohol infusions of the stuff (both root and leaves) mixed with other herbs.

3) if you have clay soil, they are just about the only thing that will loosen it. Unlike mechanical methods, they create channels that go down one foot or more. Everything grows in a spot where a dandelion once grew.

Toward the very end of WW II (spring 1945) when parts of Europe had been bombed to smithereens and food was almost non-existent, many people survived on dandelion and other greens that were found growing along roads, in fields, parks, wherever. Incredible as it may sound, but dandelions probably saved a few lives....

I'm with Glib, I too find dandelions valuable, for various reasons....

This year our town seems to be having a mass growing of dandelions and violets, very pretty combination and every yard in my area has them even the normally immaculate ones. I like the looks of dandelions in the green grass myself. I mow them over and dig them out of the flower beds but I really don't care that they are there.

I could care less if I got them in my lawn too. I actually prefer dandelions and violets to a lawn anyways. The purple and yellow are pretty. As for my garden... not so much.

our yard is violets, clover, and grass. If only there was a way to kill the grass. The clover is lovely and lush.

I've heard lots of people saying they have tons of dandelions this year. I do too. They don't bother me, and the birds love them. I wonder why they're so prolific this year?

it is my understanding that dandelions are not native to nrt america, the settlers couldn't live without them I guess. We want to try a batch of the wine one of these years.

Dandelion wine is fantastic :) Just a HUGE pain to make as you need thousands of dandelions to make a decent batch.

However, don't let that discourage you - it's great wine :) And at least do it once (my father does it every year) - just to try the taste.
