clay soil with tons of worms

the house i just moved in has soil that is clay and does not drain well. it has like 9 worms per half foot that i dig up when i tilled it.i added some topsoil to it and alot of grass,so now it has like a nice foot and a half of good draining soil on top. we just had rain and the water was puddled where i planted some armenian cukes,i think its because i dident amend the soil in this area. should i dig these up and amend or will they survive?is my soil good cause the worms outweigh the clay or will give me an advantage when i add organic matter?

thanks guys
