Do zucchini blossoms fall off?

Serious, over the last 2 days, I have seen the flowers, while still wrapped and closed, just fall off, apparently. I THINK they are flowers that have alredy been open, but I'm not sure, there are so many of them I can't really keep that close track.

They fall off, but the stem above it looks like they have been clipped cleanly off. Is this normal? Is this supposed to happen? Seriously, I have no clue.

Yep, happens at midnight, ::smile:: to males.
So they don't turn into pumpkins.
Males usu. come out first and die while waiting for a female.
Tis normal part of nature.

Dave, Thank you so much for the info! It has been rather hot here, above 90 degrees into the triple digits. I will put some shade netting on the eggplants, as well as my bell peppers, which are having a similar problem and upward curling leaves.

Nothing wrong, Dustbunny. Most of the time, squashes produce only male flowers the first few weeks of blooming. These fall off. In awhile you'll start seeing both males and females (the females have what look like miniature squash at the base of their stems). The males will continue to fall off, btw, even if they've fertilized females. And the female flowers will fall off too, leaving behind the miniature squash. That is actually the plant's ovary. If it's been fertilized it will grow into a squash. If not, it too will fall off.

yes, This is a plant that I have had in a pot for several years. I think this is the first time it was going to bloom. The leaves are just what I think you guys are calling "claws". They haven't opened yet. Here is another picture. As far as I known the root structure was intact. I wasn't there when my husband planted it, but as you can see from the second picture, the other ones he planted are doing fine. here is picture of the planter with 6 plants, 3 Singapore Whites, One Playful (I think) and not sure the other name, white with yellow inside This is I think "Playful" in the same planter (It was the first to bloom, and its blossoms are all spent now) And finally, one of the Singapore whites from the same planter: I guess, it can't hurt to cut off the inflo, then maybe the claws will open up, give it some time in the sun before winter comes!

There are other contributing factors to Blossom Drop other than just air temps. Air temps in the mid-90s in day time and above 75 at night cause Blossom Drop. But so do inconsistent soil moisture levels, excess nitrogen fertilizers, high humidity, hot dry winds, etc. So if your temps have only been in the 80s you may have something else going on. In the meantime as mentioned above, eat the male blossoms.

You decide how you prefer them. Some people get up early to harvest before sunrise so they get squash blossoms before they open for a crisp cone shape. Others like them partially open for cheese stuffings:

I'm getting that violet is a bit passionate about the eating of the blossoms. I'm definitely going to try it with my giant pumpkin blossoms when they arrive!

FYI:

These things are AWESOME.

Puree some lean pork with crushed red pepper, green onoin and add some gouda. Tie the end off and dip the whole thing in tempura batter. Deep fry till crisp.
