Growing Tomatoes

tomato blossoms falling off from excessive heat

I am growing tomatoes on my deck in an apt building, the heat has burned off a lot of blossoms, two of the plants all of them, I built a canopy to shade the plants and brought the two plants that suffered the most damage indoors, my question is, will more blossoms appear after the plants are moved to an environment where the sun cannot burn the blossoms off?

If the blossoms don't get pollinated because it's too hot, they will fall off.

When it cools off, pollination will start happening again. They'll keep blooming even if they don't set fruit.

Where are you that it's "burning" the tomatoes?

If you're growing an indeterminate variety, their growth pattern (on each branch) is 3 compound leaves, then 1 flower truss. That pattern is repeated as long as the plant lives, regardless of the weather.

Determinate varieties have different patterns.

"That is common to all tomatoes." This is not true! There are varieties that have been breed to produce during high heat...one of them is rutgers another is homestead! How do you think Fl. farm fields can produce tomatoes during the summers??? These are not heirloom but are nice tomatoes. I get some all summer long...medium to small but still fresh tomatoes. I plant rutgers.

Hi DC, Kimberly is tough to germinate for some reason, glad you got it to go. Usually, with Kimberly, you WILL GET what you are hoping for, a BUNCH of maters. Polish Dwarf could I suppose be successfully be placed in a pot. It is well behaved and grows to about 3 ft tall. The fruit is med size. Goose Creek and the Japanese Black Trifele are your normal larger type plants. Goose Creek has medium sized fruit while the Black fruit will be on the larger side. I have direct sown my seeds. Not all of em survived the heat and dry spell, but the ones that have are on their way. Best of luck to ya this season. (I may still plant some of those YC resistant type this season)

Megachili: I'm glad to know I'm not the only one...I'm a veteran pepper grower and I'm aware of the usual blossom drop reasons cited above. We've been hot here but not 95 degrees hot. And it's certainly not been cold. All the other chili types around it are doing just fine. The only thing I can think of is maybe it's pot bound? (15 gallon pot).. I've set three fruits 2 weeks ago - and since then - 20 blossoms have fallen to the ground. Very frustrating. Especially because the blossoms that are falling are from the lower part of the plant, and I fear that no more blossoms will form at those sturdy junctions in the stems....

"Blossom-Drop" is a condition suffered by tomatoes, peppers, snap beans, and some other fruiting vegetables where the plant blooms but fails to set fruit, the blooms die and fall off. It may be caused by the use of excess nitrogen fertilizers or dry windy conditions, but the most common cause is temperature extremes. Tomatoes, peppers and beans are especially picky about the air temps when it comes time to set fruit. If the night temps fall below 55 or rise above 75 or if the day temps are above 90, the pollen becomes tacky and non-viable. Pollination cannot occur. If the bloom isn't pollinated, the bloom dies and falls off. Control: Water the plants deeply once a week, mulch heavily to maintain constant soil moisture levels, establish windbreaks as needed, avoid using excessive amounts of nitrogen fertilizers, and wait for temperatures to moderate and stabilize. Earlier timed planting can help attain fruit set prior to the on-set of high temps, and the use of protection can compensate for cool nights. Some recommend attempting hand-pollination with an artist brush or a gentle shaking of the plant/cage/support prior to the hottest part of the day will also help. Fruit set will resume when temperatures moderate. Hormone sprays, such as "Blossom Set", may prevent some blossom drop due to LOW temperatures. However, the resulting fruit are often misshapen. But studies prove that hormone sprays do not prevent blossom drop due to HIGH temperatures.

I live in Rhode Island, the temperature has been high 80s some days, and during July-Aug it will be in the 90s.... I live in an apartment on the top floor with a deck,....and it gets so hot out there....so I built a canopy to shade the plants so they'll get partial sun hopefully that will work

There are other contributing factors to Blossom Drop other than just air temps. Air temps in the mid-90s in day time and above 75 at night cause Blossom Drop. But so do inconsistent soil moisture levels, excess nitrogen fertilizers, high humidity, hot dry winds, etc. So if your temps have only been in the 80s you may have something else going on.

That sounds like ideal temperature for growing tomatoes. Unless the temperatures get much higher on your balcony/deck. So I suspect your blossom drop might be due to some other causes. Also one should realize that not all blossoms should turn into fruit.
