A beautiful day in the neighborhood (garden!)

The ground was a bit moist, especially this morning but I'll trade a few clay balls for the opportunity to finally get some stuff planted. Tilled a bunch of ground yesterday and let it sit. Tilled it again early this morning - that's one reason it was not quite as dry as I would have preferred, but rain was predicted by noon. Ran out of tilled ground before I ran out of seeds and time, so tilled another 6-foot wide area. It too, was a bit damp but not too much so.

Planted 125 feet of potatoes (Yukon Gold and Kinnebeck) and 80 feet of Kentucky Blue Pole Beans.

The rains came, albeit about four hours later than predicted. Believe it or not, the garden needed it. I had planted a lot of strawberries, carrots, sugar snap peas (transplants), some onions and basil that had not received any significant rain since going in the ground. I also had tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, more strawberries, three blackberry and five raspberry bushes and two cherry trees that were starting to look thirsty. Plus, I had side-dressed the tomatoes and lettuce earlier this week (Tomato-tone and Blood Meal) so the rain will help that also.

Hopefully, this is the start to something good!

You must really like beans. 80 feet -- I thought I was the only one insane enough to plant 80 feet of pole beans for personal use.

I wish i had enough room to plant potatos but other then that I planted out Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, swiss chard, 3 types of lettuce, basil, oregano, sage, rosmary, fennel tyme. My pole beans are about 4" tall cukes have their first set of true leaves. Picked the last of my 1st sowing of turnips, picked some carrots and mint as well. So Im with you another buitiful day in the garden. Will be planting my eggplant and bush beans tomarrow.

Vera - Wow, sounds like such a nice day! It's so nice to take a stroll and see what plants are coming out of hibernation. After seeing your blue flax pictures, I'm excited about my little flax seedlings. It froze last night and will freeze again tonight, but should be nice by the middle of next week. Yea! I'm probably a big wimp, but I brought my WS tomatoes inside. I will put them back out tomorrow probably. Hopefully the transition from inside back outside won't kill them. I thought about transplanting them into cups, and putting the cups in a deep dish lasagna WS container, that way they'll maybe get a little more growth on them. I brought a couple herbs in that I already transplanted to pots that don't have covers. All the rest of the flowers, including annuals, I left to the elements. I imagine they'll be just fine. Jan - All the branches from the ice storm are a pain. Probably over half of the houses in my town have big piles of branches in their front yard. The city hasn't decided whether they're going to pick up the branches yet. Our neighbors decided to stack up a bunch of theirs, but unfortunately probably half of them are in our yard. We're hoping it doesn't kill our grass, but I guess if that's my main complaint, that's not too bad.

You'll want to spread out the datura. It spread about 2' for me. Same for the malva although mine had only a 1' spread. Those plants look really great.

I just got back. I had to get on the horse from the back of the pick up truck. LOL! A short ride, but I'll probably still be sore tomorrow. Several of my friends are afraid to ride since they have gotten up in years. I have a friend who is a pretty big gal and her horse spooked and tossed her on her fannie. She still has horses, but She said She will never ride again. It was a perfect day. Now, I'm looking forward to making Turkey Tetrazzi tonight. I sent Main Man to the store for some ingredients. I started baking Christmas cut-out cookies this morning at 10:30am., made the dough yesterday so all I had to do was take it from the fridge and roll it out and start with the cookie cutters. Think I got at least 3doz. baked, and tomorrow I will put the frosting on and then mail 2doz.of them to a friend on Monday. While they baked, I watched TCM movie channel (A Christmas Carol with Reginald Owen is on now), just came in from hanging the wreath on the old schoolhouse door and thinking about taking the dog for a walk. But, it's still a bit chilly out there at 33 degrees despite all the sunshine;so I'll have to think awhile about that. Hung the other wreath on the front door, an all plastic made-to-look-like boxwood wreath that I've had for years and is so sentimental. Every Christmas I find bits missing or laying at the bottom of the storage bag. It's frayed gold foil ribbon and half- glittered decorations stuck into one side of it never get replaced. I did take a quick trip around the garden to see what's going on and really need to put the leaf mulch down soon. The ground is frozen, but tonight I think we are suppose to get rain and sleet. The bird bath looks like a mini skating rink.

Gee, I feel a little guilty. All I got planted today was bell peppers, and about 25 tomato plants. I planted 25 bush beans, two types of beets and two types of radishes yesterday. I got Kinnebec, Yukon Gold and Red Pontiac potatoes in last month and two types of lettuce plus two types of kale in a couple of days ago. I've got between 35 and 40 more tomato plants and 180 onion plants to get in tomorrow. The rest of the stuff will get planted during the next week. I'm planting an entire produce section in my garden plus strawberries and rhubarb. We'll eat a lot of fresh, then can and freeze some and give some to the community kitchen.

Thats my plan, to can, freeze and dehydrate all my produce. But i do have neighbors that are willing to buy some of my stuff, becuase they either dont have the room or just no time...so what I dont use i guess ill sell to them and buy next years seeds, plants and other garden related items. But thatrs only what wont be put up. Just came from the garden today and some of my okra is about 6" tall and looking good same with the celery, took awhile to germinate but it is doing great as well. Ill be putting in my garlic and shallots today as well, hopefully i have better luck with it then last year. I planted sweet peppers out in the garden today and put my hot peppers in containers. Did 2 garden tours today, people dont look at me as im nuts anymore but now they admire my work in the garden. Its nice to see that they understand why most of my yard is garden now, but it took rising food prices and gas prices to understand. Well i better get back out ther and get more done before the rain hits. Have a great day in the garden everyone.

I (sort of) finished up my herb bed today, planting wooly thyme throughout as a ground cover.
My soil is total clay and almost too hard to dig anymore til the rains come in the fall. All of my herbs are in pots to keep them from taking over! These are mixed with flowers gnomes and birdhouses.
I'll post pics as soon as I learn how. Nancy
