Sad looking shade border

I have a LONG shade border along my fence. It's rather dry, with acid rich soil. In the early summer it's spectacular- with bleeding hearts and lily of the valley/. Next it's ferns and hostas - but after it looks pretty sad. The hostas (those which the deer haven't eaten) are tired looking, ferns dried up, bleeding hearts LONG GONE. Any suggestions??? Maybe small shrubs...evergreen - but for shade and deer resistance??

Thanks, Nancy
