Journal through February 28th

After the carnage the other day, DH and I are thinking of selling off the Moscovy duck flock, and keeping just the Rhode Island Red chickens.

It's a toss up. The duck flock is bigger, (12) they are messier, but they sell easily all summer. They are voraious bug hunters! I can sell a hatching of 20 in an afternoon and gross $50. My five hens will produce 3 hatchings each over the summer.

The chicken flock is small (5) the rooster is protective. They are devestating to the flower garden, and will need to be penned in the summer. They are more tame and more fun to watch. We can't be eating all these eggs though! Four eggs a day will give us hardening of the arteries for SURE!

Less work in the long run, unless I start raising chicks to sell. Time management is getting to be a problem. I need time with the horses, not time at the flea market. Too many worthy projects on my plate and not enough days in the week for it all.

I have to do some hard thinking on this one.
