impatient gardener, want's Broccoli Bad :-)

Okay, I have searched and googled for a broccoli time line like the person put up the other day for Toms, and all I got was James Bond!

I finally have a tiny head forming on my broccoli, about 1/2 inch, if that to be honest, does the head form slowly like the plant or does it grow quickly as in, it is the flower head?, and flowers just seem to appear as if from nowhere? and if quick is that like days, or weeks until I get a decent size head?

Thanks I am so impatient to eat some home grown at last, twice last year I grew it and nada, first lot in spring all died and fall crop was started too late :-(

They grow pretty slow when you are watching them. If a normal modern cultivar 10-14 days from that half inch bud. They are flower heads, so you want to eat them before the flowers open.

Anything that lays eggs on a vegetable plant is 90+% likely to be a pest you don't want. Bugs lay eggs on plants that the young are supposed to feed on. Eggs on veggies almost always equal something squish worthy. I commend you for wanting to know what the bug is (will be) before killing it, that is noble. The sad truth is that while there are zillions of bugs out there, many good, many harmless when it comes to veggy gardens the ratio is turned upside down. Most bugs in a veggy garden are either harmful or there to eat harmful bugs and bugs that lay eggs on veggies almost always are the harmful ones. Eggs on veggies=squish.

I've never tried potatoes in trenches before, just in a "hill". I've always been told to cut off the shoots if they were too long, but I think potatoes would grow either way anyway. So Brenda and Gillian, have you always just used your old potatoes for seed the following year? My mother swears on getting new seed every few years, because she says the harvest seems to diminish after awhile using the same potatoes year after year. My grandmother said that years back neighbors would trade potatoes for seed, and the thought was that the potatoes would get "used to" the soil in your garden and not produce as well. So I was just wondering what everyone's practices here was......buy new seed or use old?

So here is the new update . . .today my squash plants were infested by nasty little aphids. To make matters worse, the nice little black ant swarmed the aphids. yup . . . there gone. I also lost my cabbage - reinfestation of slugs. And to all - Ohh . . . I laugh about my "gardening woes" now hope that you laugh a little with me so when your having a bad gardening day or week you can hum my little tune (made popular Daniel Powter on American Idol). "Because you had a bad day - You're taking one down - You sing a sad song just to turn it around - You say you don't know - You tell me don't lie - You work at a smile and you go for a ride - You had a bad day . . . Maifleur - I have done "real gardening" outside of the pool patio - I just find it easier to garden inside . . . And my new row cover of tulle . . . It is just like gardening on my pool patio all over again. . . the tulle replaces the screen of the patio. HMMM! so maybe I was a real gardener to begin with when I gardened on the patio. Wow your plants look great, very healthy. I'm in zone 5 also but not even flowers yet except for this potted porch tomato plants I bought which has baby tomatoes on it. I use to use SuperThrive on my roses and the claims it made for roses seemed to be true it would cause all sorts of miracles on problem plants. I had never thought to use it on my tomatoes. I can remember it being very expensive at least for my pocketbook at the time. I'll google it and see what I come up with because I want a good crop this year last years was less than spectaular. Thanks, for sharing the images of your beautiful & robust plants! :)

Thanks people, so about 10 to 14 days, I am so excited, I kinda hoped for that new's but then didn't like to ask, in case of disappointment, and Dave, I am normally the most patient person you could meet, but after last year, I am willing to admit I was impatient, I am so patient I drive friends mad! even as a child, I will not open presents until the DAY! more fun that way the anticipation, but I with these boys, hadn't a clue, Dad and Pops only did purple sprouting broccoli, and my Dad called what farmerdilla showed brilliantly calibrese, and that is exactly what I asked about, so thanks for the Photo, great info as always, your, clueless of CT :-)

Heather, don't expect broccoli heads that look like THAT!!!!!!
Mine are about 1/2 that size, then I eat the side shoots!
Yummy stuff!

Heather. If you are growing Calabrese or its offsping like DeCicco, be aware that these are more akin to sprouting broccoli.Small main heads and lots of side shoots.
