I agree, once they have been removed from their native habitat and placed in commerce, there is no other option, except to try to prevent their demise. Since it is legal for landowners to remove native plants from their property and sell, barter or give them away and in some states, with a state issued permit, remove them from public property, many attempts at stopping the practice have failed. A World-Wide demand for our native's fuels the practice, with willing buyers in Europe and Japan, hundred's of thousands, possibly millions, are loaded onto airfreight carriers each year. While we may abhor such harvesting of native plants, there is another side of the controversy, the necessity of providing basic subsistence for many residents of the region, where job opportunities are often scarce or nil and whose ingrained beliefs would never permit them to ask for public assistance. I grew up in such a family, which relocated from that region for better job opportunities, but that belief has remained unchanged within our family for more than 100 years. MO Rb

I totally know what your mean ArborBluffGirl. I knew they were ephemeral but when one is faced with tons of pots and cell packs full of dirt it is hard to have enough faith to keep taking care of them. Luckily I never throw anything away *grin*. Good information is so important. I would have had way better results last year if I had known things like which are slow growing or tiny, if ephemerals die down the first year (as they do not flower), etc. The New England Wildflower Society uses the term "double dormancy" to refer to seeds that need two cold periods (with a warm period in-between). Some of these, such as trillium, do send out roots after the first cold period. Then they send out shoots the second. The Dodecatheon germinated well for me after a typical wildflower stratification, but they did not send out anything but one leaf the first year. I will post the link to the NEWS germination codes. It is a great reference guide to the germination needs of native plants. Just click the link to index of names on the top and match the codes with the directions for each species. Trillium Grandiflorum with Scent?

Well, didn't I do that well! I got petals confused with leaves and forgot the scent. I'm afraid my pic isn't useful after all, as it doesn't show the shape of the petals. My lil point-and-shoot can't handle white, so I gave up photographing them. As for describing the scent... I have a keen nose, scenting things many folks can't. My Stargazer Lily is lovely to me only when it's downwind. I loathe lavender. I am not fond of many florals, preferring those scents described as "woodsy" or even "spicy", though they never seem spicy to me. This was sweet, but clean. It had a great affect on my mood! I don't see how that can be any help, but there it is. I remembered two things --there had never been so many white trilliums there before this year. To see them, you had to go about 3/4 mile further in. Also, there was a man who lived near there a while (since deceased) who loved flowers and was, in fact, a world traveler (via Army Special Forces).

My misson today, is any Double, triple flowering Datura.
Black currant Swirl, Raspberry current Swirl, and Yellow.
Only interested in these. Will trade for ANY of my seeds above. Out of the Bluebead lily (Clintonia borealis)and Trillium.
