Planting a Long Bench at the Foundation?

Hello, I have a typical, midwestern 1950s Cape Cod style home. I'd like to redo my foundation plantings, so I did an Internet search for pictures of Cape Cods, for inspiration and ideas.

I found several old black-and-white pictures of homes with a long wood bench up against the foundation, facing out to the street. I have researched this as much as I can, and have found them called deacon's benches, long benches or courthouse benches. But have not found many, aside from a few very expensive antiques, up for sale.

I have never seen a house today with such a look. Is there an inherent problem with doing this (aesthetically or structurally) that I'm not thinking of? I think my DH could make one, they are quite simple in construction.

Seems it would be a refreshing way to cover the foundation, with just a few nice plants at its edges. Thank you for any extra information or insight.

P.S. Has anyone ever done this, or seen this?
