Earth Box vs The Grow Box ??

I just received an insert with my Thompson Morgon Seed Order from "The Grow Box". It is from a company called www.aGardenPatch.com It looks and reads like an Earth Box clone. My question is, does anyone have experience with both of them so I can compare better? I have built earth box clones and I like them but with the price of "The Grow Box" being almost half what an E.B. costs, I would consider them if they are near equal in capability.

Haven't used them. From what I hear from others they are decent, but the construction materials are inferior (to EBs). It is unknown if they are UV resistant or to what extent and the plastic is thinner.

Still, they are likely on par or superior to homemade units constructed from materials not intended to be exposed to direct sunlight or contain the weight of several gallons of water plus moist potting mix.

Thanks Justaguy. From their website about UV protection: Tough UV construction lasts a lifetime. Just add plants and potting mix. 30"L x 15"W x 12"H. Green or Terra Cotta. USA made.

They have a good guarantee that even up to one year, you can send it back with or without a receipt. I hear you in that you believe E.B. are superior in construction material and therefore endurability, but for 2 times the cost and a 4 gallong water resevoir, I will chance these to last almost as long unless I get a few more responses of unhappy customers. When I first got my starter Earth Boxes, I got them from Whole Foods for $59 each. When I recently bought seeds from Gurny's, there was an offer from Earthbox directly that sold the boxes for $37 for one (including shipping). Discount is 3 for $110, 5 for $175, and 10 for $344. obviously the more you buy, the bigger the discount. Call 1-888-588-5897 I wish I can be an industrious as others who make their own but I am already being a renegade in New York City by gardening on my balcony. (i hear that I am one of the few who veggie garden in my building. I need to maximize my yield with little space so the Earthbox option is the best one for me. So far, I am learning to be a better gardener and have higher yields every year. My first year was dismal b/c I didn't know what I was doing. Now I use seeds, start my plants in a greenhouse rack, and use self watering containers. Hopefully I will have more happy news to report at the end of summer.

If you are growing tomatoes, earthtainers are the way to go! I have both this year and in the earthbox, I have one black cherry tom and in one of the tainers I have a black cherry sharing with an Indian Stripe. The tainer cherry is shooting out of the top of the inverted cage, at least 7 feet tall on about 4 stems. It probably has 100 or more toms on it right now (multiple clusters of more than 10 toms) and probably 30 have come off of it already. The B.C. in the earthbox is about 4 feet tall and probably has 30 toms on it with maybe 10 already picked. It is healthy and happy, but the one in the tainer is a beast! I can't speak to the other veggies as I haven't tried them. Good luck.

I have very good luck in the winter greenhouse letting the daytime temperatures climb into the high 90s so that I can heat my passive solar storage, and letting the night time temperatures go down to about 45. There are sunny days when the temperature goes over 100 with no noticable deliterious effects. I water automatically twice a day on a drip system, and grow in mostly 2 or 3 gallon containers. The plants become huge over time because I don't bother pruning suckers or laterals. Plants are spaced about 3' apart in a row, and trellised so that they grow up about 10', and then hang down again. The plants look quite messy and unkempt, but they produce lots of good fruit. Here are some of the current varieties I'm growing. Arbason is a mid-sized tomato with very vigorous growth. It, like almost all the varieties I grow, is resistant to blossom end rot. There are a few heirlooms that get BER even with the regular doses of calcium nitrate I use in the fertilizer. Fruit is still good tasting, just ugly. Verona is a small tomato, larger than a cherry, with good production as a salad addition. Sun Gold is a yellow cherry that visitors often really like. It has a low acid taste, and is quite productive. Yellow pear is probably the favorite tomato of visitors; it produces huge numbers of low acid fruits on a vine that sprawls all over the place. One plant is well over 8' wide, and trellised at several points. This is a tomato that even those who say they don't like tomatoes like. I grow Brandywine, and find the flavor ok in the winter greenhouse, but it can get to be a bit meally, and I don't think it is as tasty in texture as some of the others mentioned. It is a quite large fruit, however. Other heirlooms also tend to get a bit meally during the winter, and I am slowly moving toward growing more of the modern varieties specifically bred for greenhouse production because of the better textures and flavors in the winter. So sorry to have posted a question and then be distracted... :) When Christie mentioned the flying little critters, it did strike me that there are not so many here. But then the squash plants did start to produce some little squash! Only problem is they would get so big and then that was it...they'd drop off. George: Thanks for the comments. I'm living in Guam now. I really think you and Christie must have hit it on the head with the lack of pollination. I think I'm going to have to go to the Farmer's market and try to get a new idea for something else to grow and harvest...but we do really, really miss fried yellow squash! Fried green squash is just not the same thing ... Darn!! Thanks all!

i am so glad that these posts are recent. i am concerned about the leaching of chemicals when i use plastic containers, or wood (might have been "treated"). i know nothing about this possibility and need some sources. uv was mentioned in this forum. hope that someone here knows where to start to become informed. would appreciate any info!!!!!
the reason that i think i need to grow in containers is, i feed the wild birds and they have taken over the yard, and i am concerned their droppings carry diseases. (i am glad that they have taken over the yard - they give me many pleasant moments)

any thoughts on leaching and chemical contamination from the plastic
