Picking the right plant ??

This Maiden Grass is so pretty BUT doesn't fit in.

I mean it's not the right look for this bed.

The left front of bed gets 6-8 hours full sun..one of the few places I get that much sun.

I need to put something else there, but what?

Any help?

Have enough evergreens need color.

The Missouri Botanical Garden plantfinder database allows you to plug in your zone, soil, sun, and moisture conditions, type of plant you want (shrub, tree, perennial, etc.) foliage type, flower color, etc. and gives you a list of possibilities.

Plant selection is really a personal choice. What do you like?

Except for the fern near steps I like to keep the country/cottage look.
The grass doesn't fit in. Or maybe it does...

Antique Rose Emporium knows their hot-weather roses. Look up some of their pioneer roses. They only do own-root though. (I grow only in pots, so nematodes are less of an issue for me) David Austin as some that are supposed to do well in the south, but I'm not sure if quite as far south as you are!

My favorite Canadian gardening book is Seasons of my Garden by Marjorie Harris. I also like Thomas Hobb's books (Shocking Beauty and Jewel Box) for their fabulous pictures. But I also love some non-Canadian books such as anything by Ken Druse and Time Tested Plants by Pamela Harper. I do enjoy Front Yard Gardens, but I guess I enjoy even more the in-depth personal accounts of individual gardeners, the plants they love, their stories of passionately devoting themselves to a single garden over many years and pictures which show the evolution of their own gardens.

Hi! I finally settled on: some knockout roses, pink pentas, caladiums, mexican petunias, a little purple queen, a little yellow lantana, some pineapples, a firebush (which doesn't seem happy in the full sun spot I chose....), a meyer lemon tree, and some pink crown of thorns. I think I need a couple of other clumps of color or something to balance... theres a spot that needs some white or orange. For white I've thought of maybe vinca (?) but I thought maybe someone else might have a better suggestion... and I am not so fond of them but I know they are drought tolerant and perennial. I think I could also use something with a little height in addition, not necessarily a white or orange flower. The photos don't really do it justice, and it had been so dry I was holding off a little on spending more on plants to fill in, but now that the rain has started I'm ready. And now what I've planted will fill in too, although I am wishing it would hurry up a bit! :-) thanks for any suggestions! Here is a link that might be useful: june gallery

I like the maidengrass. How about some daylilies?
Have you looked at the cottage gardening forum?

I like that grass there...nice textural change. That said...if you want color and something cottagey...a rose would work. One of the pink double knockouts, for instance, if you want something relatively low care. Or any number of roses, if you are willing to deal with the spraying. I have Pretty Lady (a floribunda) in my garden...she does well even without spraying. Put this bush in three years ago--maybe four...

As far as "need color" how about a dwarf weigelia (or however you spell it) var. "Wine and Roses." I have seen dwarf varieties at the nurseries around here. A little smaller but gorgeous--Heuchera, i.e. "Coral Bells." That comes in many colorful leaf varieties, including red leafed. I have seen it get quite large in some landscaping situtations, so maybe there are larger varieties, so I would check the label or ask about that. I love Diablo ninebark, but that gets HUGE. Maybe they will come out with a dwarf variety of that. I have seen some mention if it, but never seen it in a nursery.

Or the lorapetalum 'Purple Diamond'--great leaf color, evergreen(ish) and the deer leave it alone.
