Thanks for your suggestions. I called the Potato Garden and was able to talk with someone and place an order right away. It turns out it is the same company as Ronniger's Potato Farm. That explains why their catalog was identical to the Potato Garden! They were having problems with frozen pipes in their office and phone problems, which explains the delay in call back. Hopefully they will send the order promptly as promised.

I live in Emeryville, which is pretty close to Alameda. I've found that it really matters how much shade a rose is grown in, even a half hour more sun can make the difference between 3 flushes a year and 2. From experience I reccomend if you're planning to plant a rose in partial shade, keep it in a pot for the first year, where you wish to plant it, to see if it blooms well there, if it does not it will be easy to move, or replace it with a more shade tolerant rose. In our rose garden, 5 hours full sun with 2-3 hours partial sunlight, where sunlight is still strong enough to cast a shadow from ones' hand allows "Bubble Bath" to bloom 3-4 times a year. Mine is about to have another flush if the colored buds don't rot in this rainstorm (week of January 23!). The blooms are quite fragrant and the scent carries on the air. "Bubble Bath is the most shade tolerant remontant rose I have ever grown. We moved an "Alistair Stella Gray" to the same area as "Bubble Bath" and it stopped blooming, but did well where it received 6 hours full sun and 2 hours of partial sun. "Crepescule" has been blooming well with 6 hours full sun and 2 hours of partial sun, it appears to be a bit more tolerant of shade than our "Mme. Alfred Carriere". You cant go wrong with pickering, what part of mass do you live in? Zone 6 Mass isnt anything like zone 6 kansas... way too long winter and freeze thaw cycles. I lived in western mass, near springfield , it was more zone 5a there... You can get away with more marginal climbers with less dieback nearer to mass coast. But you should probably stick with canadian climbers are the few rare ogr you can grow as true climbers. Great Maidens blush is a beutiful alba btw, it will grow to about 6-7 or more feet in the end, I wouldnt think it would be a great obelisk rose, well I guess with enough pruning you could do anything you really want =). One thing I would recommend, is not to get your heart set on the marginal as much... I tried a few for a few years, spent lots of money on roses that I shouldnt have. If I just stuck with alot of the hardies it wouldnt have broken the bank as much. But we all have our own pain tolerence, I know my zone 5 is as far removed as a zone 5 say in ohio as could be.. you wouldnt think so but its just our very long winters and short growing seasons. The Austins probable wont do that well in partial shade, but you can try, maybe one of the older ones like wife of bath... not as far removed from the ogr genes in them. I bet a rose like westerland would do very well for you in your zone, it wouldnt work for me, way too much dieback... Great Maidens Blush... Silverkelt

thanks for all the great information. I've been googling all over for the perfect fit but i've been so adamant about fragrance...I guess I need to recalibrate a bit :) i have some david austins planted in that bed but further from that wall. it was suggested to me by someone that has them in the same zone but lower in the state she said they can take the heat...tamora, carding mill. i don't have anything against the wall other than a gemini. I do have a couple of sprayers that I was considering what to do with them...now I will use them for the trellis area. Abe Darby, Lady Emma Hamilton, and Jude the Obscure are all roses on my wishlist...maybe i'll try 1 or 2 of those mixed with something hardier like angel face...it looks lovely! i'm debating a young lycidas near the wall also...i've read here that it seems to do well in heat. i'm still looking for a creamy white climber that does well in the heat...fragrance or no...with a full cupped blossom...anyone have known performers? thank you.
