Newly planted asparagus crowns

Hi Everyone,

I just planted asparagus crowns and am wondering how long it will take before I will see little green heads poking though the soil. I know I am impatient, but I am also just curious. I need to add more soil and am just wondering approximately how long it will be.

Quite a while. Asparagus is one of those crops that takes a lot of patience. My new plantings have been in for almost a month now, and I'm not seeing anything. When the shoots do come up, they are very very thin. Even two-year-old plants are pretty small. By the fourth year, though, you'll realize the wait was worth it.

Depending on how deep you planted and how much you covered them it and well they are kept watered and how much nutrients are available will be anywhere from 3-6 weeks although it can take longer. I would advise waiting until the soil is suitable and do it right the first time. Those roots will hold longer than you think. Due to the wettest year in recorded history last year, I could not get mine in until June. I thought it was a waste of time and effort, but was I ever wrong. Those plants flourished like no other first year asparagus I've ever planted--they grew over four feet last year and we found dozens of harvestable new shoots on them today!! They too were bought at Walmart. My high-end mail order roots that received the most diligent care did not thrive nor survive. You never know.

I plant mine about a foot deep but leave the trench open and only cover the crowns with a few inches of soil. Then I fill it in gradually keeping the growing tips always above the soil level so the young plants can keep photosynthesizing. The following year they'll come up right through that soil on their own. -Mark

How long until newly planted asparagus sprouts?

I planted 7 roots - I'd have to look back when I did it, but maybe mid-April? Iirc, one sprouted around 10 days later, and they have been gradually taking turns at sprouting. The last one finally started showing signs of life last week - and the early ones are already over a foot tall. I soaked them all in worm poo compost tea as I was prepping the trench - no idea if that made much of a difference or not. ;) This was in a lasagna bed that I started prepping in the fall.

Asparagus crowns go in as early in the spring as the ground can be worked. You don't want the ground boggy from snow melt though. I live in the very northern Catskills in zone 5 (we must not be as high up as you are) and planted mine 3 years ago in early April.

I put some crowns in 10 days ago and out of 45 more than 30 have come up. I ,initially, made the mistake of putting them in upside down but went in and righted crowns. The article I followed for planting asparagus said they should begin to pop up in about 1 week. Paul
