planting asparagus crowns

I done web searches on planting asparagus crowns & I'm finding varied instructions. depths run from a few inches to 18". an old gardener I knew back in the 70's said he planted his 18". how deep is too deep? I planted some last year & I'm not seeing too many return this year but the spot I picked is staying wetter than I thought it would so I'm starting a new bed in an area with better drainage. I also have plenty of compost & composted horse poop to mix in when refilling the trench

Check out the Ohio State Bulletin online. It is quite complete and I have followed it successfully a few times. They recommend only a five to six inch depth.

I plant mine about a foot deep but leave the trench open and only cover the crowns with a few inches of soil. Then I fill it in gradually keeping the growing tips always above the soil level so the young plants can keep photosynthesizing. The following year they'll come up right through that soil on their own.

Hi Hny, I also started a new asparagus plot this year and my plants just started poking up this weekend. If nothing pops up by the weekend, I would dig down and gently inspect roots to see if they rotted.

Smart idea to google that. I tried finding pics, but you out-Googled me there. :) Oh man! I'm pretty sure that I did them upside down. I have NO idea how I did that. These crowns I bought over the internet and looked really roughed up although I should know better as I've been growing them for 10 years myself from seed and divisions. I guess I better put aside an hour and get it done. Thanks for the info!

No, it is not necessary. Some could even argue it doesn't provide any measurable benefit at all :-) But the crowns do need to be fully hydrated before planting so soaking for a few minutes in just plain water can be helpful if the roots look dry and brittle - they shouldn't. But you should spend some time on properly amending the planting area before planting. Cultivate well to a depth of 12" and work in a good amount of compost. Some dry organic, all purpose fertilizer won't hurt either (follow label directions for new plantings).
