S AL Landscape Suggestions Needed

Hello!

We moved into our house nearly 9 months ago and so far we've managed to lay down our sod. The longer we put this landscape designing task off, the harder it seems to be. We are in south AL in zone 8B. Ideally, I would enjoy having a light airy layout. I'm not overly fond of hedges, but we do plan on putting some type of bushes around the house. I'd like suggestions for low growing bushes with a light airy feel. Please take a look at the pictures and offer any suggestions you have. We are wide open to anything right now. In addition to bushes, we would also like to plant some trees for shade. We are thinking of planting a live oak or two for starters. I'd also like to have something rather tall on either side of the front door. We don't know what to do there either though. Maybe on both sides, or maybe just on the left. ??? Also, the porch is only about 9 inches off the ground. I don't think I want to completely hide it. Anyway, I'm going to post some pictures so you can see what we're dealing with here and please post any suggestions or questions you have! We will be very interested in talking to you all about your ideas!

I really like the way LazyGardens worded that, to say your landscaping will start at the street and go to the house. So often people start and stop their landscaping at the foundation. Having said that, you have a foundation bed prepared, and this would not be a bad place to start. The shape of the bed is predetermined and so there are no decisions to make other than plant material. This area would look best planted with a mostly evergreen foundation planting, which does not tend to be heavily flowering (unless you add rhododendrons, which won't all like this much sun). I would suggest you visit a few local nurseries and look for evergreens to create a basic shape and structure for the bed. Pick plants you like, based mainly on the shape they have - straight and narrow, round, pyramid, arching, etc (and make sure they can tolerate sun). Once you have those in place, you can add flowering plants to accent them. Out in the yard, you can have more height, and there you need to think about what views you want to preserve or prevent, how much maintenance work you want to do, where you want shade from eventual trees, and so on. It looks and sounds so nice in action! I think you have to do a little more rock placing to cover the most obvious parts of the liner along the edge of the stream. Then, can you add more dirt to the sides so you can actually plant something? Fake plants won't look very good. I'm thinking of plants like hosta and hakonechloa grass that will soften and cover the edges, and can drape over any pipes or liner that you can't get with rock. Hosta are very tough. Or if you can add at least an inch or two of dirt, you could plant a groundcover that doesn't need much depth to its roots like vinca. Whaas, I wish you luck in your endeavor. If you live anywhere near a larger town or city, it would be well worth your while to look up privately owned landscaping companies and garden centers. My suggestion will be to take pictures of the plants, list them by their binomial nomenclature and typical common name, estimate their size. Your pictures might include a pole or something to reference the size. You can email your list to the contacts you may find. Be sure that you emphasise that your property must be left in good order after they dig plants.

Took a little longer than expected, but I managed to snap a few more pictures as Yardvaark had suggested. From left to right... A few bonus pictures... this is the left hand side of the house... pretty bare right now: Right side walkway that I despise and can't stand to look at any longer.... Rear side of deck where I would like to put a small lawn mower storage shed along the back wall and a simple walkway from the narrow gate to the backyard. Your being a newbie, non-poster had little to do with the lack of response here. If you look at the zones of those who answer most questions, they're from areas quite unlike yours. Possibly nobody from the Coastal South happened in here during the four days that you impatiently waited.

Here's a link to an informative site with plants that should work in your area (North Florida plants will work in neighboring states). The University of Alabama Extension web site, Mississippi State and Texas A&M U all have lots of helpful information on their Hort web sites.

The best help seems to come to those who do their homework first and then ask specific questions about plants they think might work, one planting area at a time.

I'm just a reader, not a designer.

It's a very nice looking house, and for once the builder has made the path fairly wide, and left more than the usual measly 2 foot planter between house and walk, so you are off to a good start.

I'm sorry, but I don't know a thing about trees or shrubs for your zone, and beyond that I am a complete amateur, so I thought it better not to comment and pass on possibly bad information.

Perhaps you can stimulate more conversation by talking about a "look" you might have in mind? Ask about specific trees you are considering? Are you an avid gardener or are you looking for something that will be maintained without much effort? Do you need a grass field for the kids or are you looking for masses of flowers? Narrow things down a bit and folks will offer ideas.

You did ask about low and airy bushes, which here might include certain salvias, pentas, or agapanthus, but I don't know if they will work for you.

Things have been slow here in general; don't give up.
