I just today transplanted some tiny Great White tomatoes. I seeded some Ruby Queen corn, and some Golden zucchinis, so I sure hope its not too late!! We have crazy weather here, there was no way to start anything from seed even as late as first week in May, we were having 40 degree nights. I know lots of folks replanted squash, beans etc, that they lost from rain and cold in our area. I had the garden plowed and tilled WAY too early (April) so now it is overgrown with johnson grass and weeds, so its all I can do to clear out and plant a small patch each day! I have Silver queens that are sprouting and growing well, kandy Korn a foot or more high, so I thought i would get a 3rd flavor going! next week I seeding some Sugar Dots too. It may be late, but Im planting anyways! I see some corn and other plants here that are waist high, and others that are tiny, so lots of people planted late, so I think its okay to start whenever you can, just protect your plants later if it gets cold quick in your area, I know we wont have cold until at least Oct.

Kristin, There's a lot you still can plant. Peppers, yes, from transplants. Potatoes--no for Irish potatoes, yes for sweet potatoes from slips. Here's a list of OSU-recommended planting dates for warm-season crops. You still can plant almost anything on this list, even if the recommended dates have passed, except for sweet corn. For the plants with recommended planting dates of April 10-30, I generally get good harvests even if I plant them as late as late-May. Lima Beans April 15-30 seed Bush Beans April 10-30 seed Pole Beans April 10-30 seed Cantaloupes and Muskmelons May 1-20 seed or plant Cucumbers April 10-30 or later seed or plant Eggplant April 10-30 plant Okra April 10-30 or later seed Pepper April 10-30 or later plant Southern Peas (black-eye, cream, crowder) May 1 - June 10 seed Summer Squash April 10-30 or later seed or plant Winter Squash May 15 - June 15 seed or plant Sweet Corn Mar 15 - Apr 15 seed Sweet Potato May 1 - June 10 plant Tomato April 10-30 plant Watermelon May 1-20 seed or plant You also could plant warm-weather greens like New Zealand Spinach or Swiss Chard. For the cute little green worms on your broccoli plants, you can hand-pick them or you can spray with a non-toxic organic product that has Bacillus thuringiensis, Kurstaki strain as the active ingredient. The Bt caterpillar sprays are usually available at any nursery or farm store, and sometimes also can be found at big box stores. Bt is a bacteria that targets feeding caterpillars. They ingest it and die within 24 hours. The drawback to using it is that it kills all the butterfly and moth larvae that make contact with it, so be careful to spray it only on target plants like cabbage and broccoli and don't spray it on ornamental flowers that attract a lot of butterflies. You can find Bt in many products. Thuricide is the one I see at our local TSC and Dipel is the one I usually see at one of the Big Box home center stores here. You also could plant almost any kind of herb from transplants, including rosemary, fennel, parsley, oregano, marjoram, basil, dill, sage, thyme, etc. You still could sow seeds of some herbs, including dill and basil. You could sow parsley seed but you'll get higher germination rates if you pre-soak the seed in a cup of cold water in your refrigerator for a day or so before planting it. In a few days I'll post the fall planting dates since we get a "second chance" with many crops in the fall. We start planting fall crops in the summer here and the hardest part is getting them established in the heat, but it can be done with careful attention to watering. Dawn

Bloom time is absolutely influenced by the local micro-climate it's planted in. The bloom weeks are counted from the bloom date of Red Charm, I think! Don't have Red Charm yet so can't count mine that way! I have some that are described as mid that bloom with the earlies, lates are typically late here, though. IDing can sometimes turn into a multi-year process, Pembroke! I finally IDed my NOID1 from last year, it's Blaze. IDed by accident, went into a local nursery and they had several herbaceous peonies for sale and one variety had buds and blooms that matched mine well except it was more red. Figure mine is in full sun so it'd be a bit more washed out but the white flares on the buds are very distinctive, PLUS I know I ordered Blaze, was on my list to find but the flares weren't noted in the description I had. Do you have a list of the ones you're supposed to have? Is there anything completely distinctive about the plant or the flower? When I went about figuring out names I listed every variety I had then searched for and located those with legible markers. I grouped the ones I couldn't find into three lists: bloom time, bloom color and bloom shape. When one bloomed I started on the bloom time list to find any likely suspects then moved on to the other 2 lists. It worked on a few but not all--think I have some mis-labeled from the grower mixed in to make the process even more fun!

Hi again! I just wanted to add something. It seems most folks on this forum are into organic gardening and the suggestions in my previous post do not fit into that category. I donÂt know if you use the organic approach or not, so I may not have been helpful. I would love to attempt organic gardening but most of my time is hardly my own and I know organic gardening takes much more time and effort. I am far from being retired and I have my own business selling on eBay, help manage my husbandÂs business, take care of my autistic grandson (a lovely child despite his disability), and also care for my 85 year-old mother (but sheÂs a "peach" and a delight to be around). Life is very hectic around here! If I did not use chemical fertilizer, I would not be able to have a garden at all. Another one of my limitations is the lack of a place to keep compost. My husband is very "finicky" about the yard and IÂm sure he would not approve of something "rotting" anywhere. I have very little garden space (my back yard is way smaller than my front yard and it is too difficult for me to care for a garden in the front). Actually, I really donÂt have a garden but I plant my veggies and herbs in my flower beds, and a few in potsÂwhen I run out of room altogether. However, I feel the results of the fertilizer keep my plants so healthy (it seems that healthy plants are not good candidates for insect attacks) that I have never had a need for an insecticide, and I wouldnÂt use one even if there was a problem. The only exception was one year, when I did have a problem with tomato hornworms (hope they donÂt come back, they are the "grossest" things) and I dealt with it the best that I could without resorting to using poisonous chemicals. I just wanted to elaborate so that you wouldnÂt think that IÂm opposed to organic gardening if, in fact, that is your approach.
