Please explain the seasons of peonies. I see some bloom a little earlier than others and then some a little later. The pink that I ask help in identifying is now in full bloom. Mid or late? Pembroke

Bloom time is absolutely influenced by the local micro-climate it's planted in. The bloom weeks are counted from the bloom date of Red Charm, I think! Don't have Red Charm yet so can't count mine that way! I have some that are described as mid that bloom with the earlies, lates are typically late here, though.
IDing can sometimes turn into a multi-year process, Pembroke! I finally IDed my NOID1 from last year, it's Blaze. IDed by accident, went into a local nursery and they had several herbaceous peonies for sale and one variety had buds and blooms that matched mine well except it was more red. Figure mine is in full sun so it'd be a bit more washed out but the white flares on the buds are very distinctive, PLUS I know I ordered Blaze, was on my list to find but the flares weren't noted in the description I had. Do you have a list of the ones you're supposed to have? Is there anything completely distinctive about the plant or the flower? When I went about figuring out names I listed every variety I had then searched for and located those with legible markers. I grouped the ones I couldn't find into three lists: bloom time, bloom color and bloom shape. When one bloomed I started on the bloom time list to find any likely suspects then moved on to the other 2 lists. It worked on a few but not all--think I have some mis-labeled from the grower mixed in to make the process even more fun!

I think LizinElizabeth said it all. I think there is a site called peonybloomtime that tells you the bloom time based on days from Red Charm. I had bought Felix Crousse & Karl Rosenfeld, both listed as red peonies blooming late midseason. I had them planted side by side, lost my tags & no idea which was which, but there was a few days difference in their bloom time so I was able to work it out by that site.
I'm in southern KY, my peonies are finishing up, so I would think yours starting bloom now would be late.

I think you are somewhat confused about daffodils. While it is true that there are early to late bloomers, this refers to the daffodil season, not a calendar year. In my zone 7b-8A garden (east central Mississippi), my earliest blooms are Narcissus tazetta, Grand Primo, which can occur as early as the week of Christmas and the latest bloomers are usually finished by late April. Because our springs can heat up early and unexpectedly, I have found that my early and mid bloomers last longer and give me far more pleasure. The late ones bloom out sometimes within a week or so and then their foliage hangs around seemingly FOREVER. Unfortunately, almost all white bloomers are also late bloomers. You are obviously very interested. I recommend that you get a copy of Scott Ogden's "Garden Bulbs for the South". He will de-mystify this for you and you can depend on his recommendations. You will find that gardening, including bulb gardening is very different in the south, and that although books written for the north can be helpful, many of the things they teach and say simply are not true or do not work in our climate.

I'm in Newport News, so my dates will be a bit earlier than yours, but my earlies bloom in mid April, midseasons in late April-early May, and lates are just finishing up now. Two good resources for you, depending on your exact location, would be to visit Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond (they have an amazing peony collection, including intersectionals, tree peonies, and herbaceous varieties) or Andre Viette's nursery in Fishersville (they have fields of labeled peonies in bloom in May), at the time for which you want a peony to bloom in your garden. You could then actually see what's in bloom at that exact time, and take it from there.

Looking for Info on Lil's Favorite Tomato

Carolyn has it pretty much right, I'll just expand a bit. I received the seeds from my Aunt Lil when she came out to PA for a Christmas visit in about 1985. She was 77 at the time and passed away in 2002. She told me they were her favorite tomato and that she had gotten them from Mrs Smith who lived in Briar Hill, which was just next to Signal Hill where my aunt lived in St. Clair County, Illinois. Mrs Smith told Aunt Lil that her mother had given the seeds to her, and the family had been growing them around Chester, Illinois for many many years. I remember the Smith family as their son, Richard, was the janitor/boiler operator/general Mr. Fixit for my grade school. I am 74 years old these days! Ok, what about the tomato. Well, I rate it as 78 DTM. It is regular leaf and indeterminate. The plants grow extremely large and seem to survive whatever wants at them including blights, etc. Sure, they will show distress but they just hang in there and give a good yield. The fruits produced are red beefsteaks, generally very regularly shaped, but they set often enough that I just pluck off any distorted ones to let the energy go into the nicer ones. I have had them as big as 20 ounces but pretty consistently they will do 12 to 18 ounces. Overall yields are very good and the taste is full and slightly acidic. If the seeds you have are my "Lil's Favorite" you have a good one there! Just be sure and use a very heavy big stake for it, like a 2"x2" by 5 to 6 ft tall. I also suggest you train to 3 leaders max as the plants can get too large and bushy otherwise. Larry (LW)
