Phalaenopsis? sun exposure?
Comments (3)Hi, chueh. Richard is giving you good advice about avoiding hot direct sun. I do give my phals a little more light than he suggests because I like lots of growth and blooms. But your sun is probably hotter than mine, and as richard suggests, take care not to give direct hot sun. That can damage the plant severely. What I suggest is easing it closer to a window over a couple of weeks, testing the leaves to make sure they are cool. As long as the leaves are cool to barely warm, the light is not too strong. If the leaves are warm, move further away from the window. Below is an url to culture notes on growing and blooming phals especially written for new indoor growers by Peter Lin of Big Leaf Orchids. A little time spent reading them will replay you handsomely in confidence about your growing. Good luck. Here is a link that might be useful: Growing and blooming phals, by Peter Lin...See MoreCentennial Spirit Crape Myrtle- sun exposure?
Comments (3)Your Crape Myrtle could reach about 20, if not killed back by a cold winter. I fear that it might be a bit lanky and leggy since it will not be grown in the full sun. Flowering might be weak, as well. But the most troubling problem will be that of powdery mildew. You see, Centennial Spirit is not one of the hybrids (L. indica x faureii) so popular in today's landscapes. These hybrids bring wonderful attributes to this genus of plants...gorgeous fall color, high disease resistance, and beautiful exfoliating bark. Centennial Spirit is a pure Lagerstroemia indica. Some sites report powdery mildew resistance as fair (which really means terrible), while others list it as good (which means fair). I fear that your crape will be even more susceptible without the full, blazing sun....See Moregardenias and sun exposure
Comments (14)My trailing gardenia has been happy for about 14 years in a spot that only gets direct sun from about 2-5 or 6 in the afternoon. Goes against all the rules, but it's worked well. I wouldn't give up gardenias if someone tried them in the past couple of droughty years. Try again this year with the plentiful rain. I lost a couple last year that i just planted then, too. It's very hard to establish even not so persnickety things going during a drought, let alone the divas. Cameron, just when i thought my winter daphne was in the clear from the dreaded fungal disease (it was about 8 yrs old) it succumbed- and super quickly. This was a couple yrs ago now. I've decided i'll just overlap them in my garden, planting a new one every 3 or 4 years in a new spot to take over when the old one checks out....See MoreStewartia sun exposure
Comments (4)I could tell you only from my experience that my S.koreana which is planted in SW exposure (6+ hours of afternoon sun) is always having fried tips on a leaves starting from mid-August despite being well watered. However, I planted S.pseudocamellia in a friend's garden in an only available place where it is exposed 4 hours to the late day sun and it is doing great there....See Morekwoksmusic
