Looks like a bean to me

Right, at the level of the seed piece and somewhat higher, the tuber-bearing filaments come off the stalk as long as it is kept covered with soil or mulch. Generally speaking once the stalk is quite green it will no longer make tubers from that point, which simply means the plant will put more energy into fewer tubers not necessarily less yield. I make a shallow trench to put the seed into and cover with one or two inches of soil. In the bottom of the trench first goes compost unless the ground is fairly rich. A sprinkling of epsom salt is good and wood ashes if you have any. When the plant is vigorously growing N can be supplied with urine diluted 5 or 10 to one with water. Potatoes like tomatoes are highly symbiotic with mycorhizzae. If you can find old wood chips or twigs with fungi on them toss them in the compost in the trench and soak the trench good of course. One can also buy the spores by mail and inoculate the compost or rotted manure, etc. Once the garden area is well grown out with myco you're all set if you don't till too much, keep the OM up, don't let the ground get bone-dry with means don't let it be bare for long periods. Even weeds help. Every common crop family except brassica needs the myco's for optimum health.

MsFuzz, I only saved seed from my grandmother's tomato at first, and for many years. Large Red Cherry must have been in my garden for 10 years before I realized that it was an heirloom and I could save seed. In fact, it was the great Ben Quisenberry who saved LRC, I guess. He is the same person we have to thank for the Brandywine. There may not be a whole, heckuva lot of open-pollinated varieties I can grow. I almost need those thrive-on-abuse, lightening-quick hybrids but . . . not really. I don't think I've got a cross-bred EG. I don't think it is a mutant. I think (not sure) that I've got EG's mother. If the worker didn't remove the stamens from a flower on a plant that he/she was pollinating for a hybrid, that flower would probably self-pollinate. That's what tomatoes do. So, all the genetic material in the seeds from the fruit of that flower would be from the mother plant. How would they know that one of the fruits didn't have hybrid seeds inside? If the mother was a hybrid, I may be outta-luck using the mystery plant's seed but, I looked at information on tomato hybridizing (linked below). They say that, "Both parents should be pure, preferably being selfpollinated for more than six generations . . ." So, it sounds as tho' this should just be a normal non-hybrid plant. If there is something special about it, the earliness of fruit development might be it. I know that it ain't got no resistance to flea beetles!! (Now watch the plant patent police show up in my garden to seize the mystery plant! If I fall silent about this subject, you know that a judge has issued a gag order . . ! ;o) Steve it would probably take a gag order to shut me up about most anything . . . (thats the coolest its gonna get). They can get that large huh? thanks for letting me know. thanks pitcom...guess i was worried for nothing! @vgkg ouu....i shall do exactly that. can't wait for them to start giving sweet potatoes back. you make it sound simple that i have hope to cultivate a green thumb. such useful info ^-^ All i have to do know is look for a larger space in this house and ill keep you guys posted! :D Heres an update. the rooted one's sprouts are ready i think to be planted. i think the one that didnt root well isnt growing any further. so i'll just take the sprouts ive gotten so far and plant them.
