Comments (7)It's a bit late to grow your own slips, but it is really easy to do. I never buy plants. Instead, in early Spring I put a sweet potato in a glass of water, so about half of it is submerged. In a couple of days you will see roots begin to grow in the water. In a week or two, shoots should start sprouting from the upper half. When the shoots are four or five inches long, snap them off and place them in another glass of water. The shoots (or slips) will grow roots and leaves. These are your baby sweet potato plants. One large sweet potato will produce dozens of slips. The trick is to find a sweet potato that has not been treated with a chemical that inhibits sprouting. Your best bet is an organic sweet potato, or one you've grown yourself. This Spring I used a very large, rather gnarly sweet potato from last Summers harvest that had already begun to sprout. I got at least two dozen slips from it, and it is still producing!...See MoreI.D. sweet potato
Comments (1)Larry, They sure are blooming beautifully this year. I do remember when you asked this question last year, and my best guess is that it might be an ornamental sweet potato cutleaf variety named Lady Fingers. There are many other cutleaf varieties of ornamental sweet potatoes, though, and I don't pretend to be able to identify them all. It is just that of the cutleaf varieties I've grown, yours most resembles either Lady Fingers or one of the Sweet Caroline cutleaf types. There's a total of at least 14 different Sweet Caroline varieties, and more are released almost every year so it also could be one of the newer Sweet Caroline varieties. I'm going to link an article below because a photo in that article has several Sweet Potato varieties featured, including Sweet Caroline Light Green and Sweet Caroline Bronze. There's several other colors in that specific line but they all have the same basic leaf shape. Comments (12)Thank you, thank you, thank you -------- everyone! I was just trying to add a little more fun to a few everyday dishes. Let's start with the strawberries. As I said, inspired by Ann, but with a little modification on my part. I used half cream cheese and half whipped cream because I like cream with strawberries better. I did not use vanilla, I am not sure vanilla is compatible with strawberries. The sprinkle is dark chocolate. I think chocolate should not compete with the strawberries and should act as a "seasoning" instead. The wild rice was steamed in Zongzi Grass leaves. Zongzi Grass leaves, not bamboo leaves as they are called by some, have been used to steam rice in the Far East for centuries. They impart a very nice flavor to rice. The ravioli: Well made ravioli should have very thin skin; however, I like pasta, so how do you make ravioli with more pasta? If I make ravioli with wide fringes, that would make them look kind of clumsy. So I came up with this idea as well home-made myself a cutter that would give me thin skinned ravioli and more pasta to go with the sauce. It also kind of makes the ravioli intriguing looking. dcarch...See MoreNatasha Larmie
