Trying my hand at container gardening.

Hello everyone!

I'm completely new to gardening of any sort, so you can think of me as the ultimate newbie... I live in an apartment in Toronto and have a West facing balcony. I'd like to give container gardening a try... but am a loss as to where to begin.

I bought a couple of bulbs that are supposed to be easy to grow [Grape Hyacinths, Dwarf irises and Crocus (mixed colours)].

My friend (who also has no clue about gardening of any sort) generously gave me several packages of seeds (Grape Hyacinth, Lily of the Valley, English Daisy, Lupin "Dwarf Gallery" and Lily of the Nile).

I have a couple of planters all measuring 11" on every dimension (cube shaped).

And that is pretty much what I have so far. What do I do next? What kind of soil do I need to purchase? I gone through many garden guides, and have just become more confused. Could someone here please help me out!
