Update on terrible front yard...

I posted about this front yard on here before. (Thanks everyone for all the ideas.) Here's a better pic.

Some added info - none of the trees are touching the house, or even close to it. Behind the trees is a porch that comes out about 10 feet from the house. We want to leave as many trees as possible to keep the blazing sun out of the front window.

We would like to continue our front yard project using some landscaping ties, or possibly railroad ties. I'm wondering how they are fastened to the ground and to each other. We have the weed guard stuff ready and I'm trying to decide on the type and size of wood. What's the best kind of substrate? (preferably a stone type)

We're considering putting a few low, spreading junipers in a couple spots, especially if we remove the pine tree.

The stairs are a whole other project, one that I'm not lookin' forward to.
