questions about overwintering container perennials

Reposting as my original post seems to have disappeared!

I have a few perennials in 10-12" clay pots: Autumn sage, Verbena, Sedums, Lantana and Plumbago... Our lowest temperatures haven't gone below mid-40s so far, but that'll soon change. I was wondering what might be the best way to overwinter these container perennials. Should I wait till first frost or take action now? Am I supposed to cut them down? And should I leave them outside, or bring them inside an unheated garage or inside the house? What would be the water and light requirements for these over the winter? As you can tell, this is my first winter with perennials, and any advice is much appreciated!
