Do you listen to and enjoy the song of the mockingbird?

I often ask this of friends. more often than not, their reply is that they don't know. How can one not know? They wonder if a bird is mocking other birds, that one maybe cannot tell for sure it is a Mockingbird.

Well...given any song, by any artist, if Elvis sang it, could you likely tell it was Elvis and not the original artist? That is how easy I think it is to identify ole Mr Mockingbird himself. I love to hear him sing, but if he is close by, and sings the same tune (say for 15 minutes or more), it tends to make me nutso...much like a song being played over, and over, and over. Has anyone else ever been bothered by too much of the mockingbird's singing at one time?

i love to listen to them all, but it kinda depends on the day... some days i can only handle it for a bit, and others, i can listen to it alll day, :'))

We had a cottage when I was growing up and we heard those and the catbirds. I can never get enough of any bird song.

I know last year after we moved into this house, I was outside about 5:30am. I was on my back patio and it was just before sunup. All of a sudden, all the daybreak birds (know which ones I mean?) starting chirping from all over and it echoed down to me. It was awesome!!!

Show biz personalities don't interest me, I tend to turn off programs where one is featured. I think Brian Lamb of C-Span (yeah, C-Span) is as good an interviewer as I've ever heard. Now retired from being the company's CEO, he has a weekly one hour program, "Q+A", dedicated to interviewing "interesting people". Whether from government, the media, arts, or whatever. He has no agenda and is a master at coming up with thoughtful questions. Available on TV, the website, or as a podcast. I also like Lawrence Lopate of WNYC. Though he and the program are very New York-centric (which doesn't interest me), many of his interview segments are of broader interest and catch my attention. Like Lamb, he's a thought provoking guy who tries to bring out the best of his guests and topics. Because WNYC is the NY public radio affiliate, they have the right location and clout to get worthwhile guests. I listen to segments of interest in podcast form.

Well, to answer the question, I listen to books through the Talking Books program that is run by the US Library of Congress National Library Service. I do all of my "reading" this way and have done so for the last 25 years. I'm very used to books on tape. Soon they will be converting to a digital format. Of course, being this kind of reader means that I don't often get to take part in discussions of books on boards like this one. I can't just order up a book from the library and expect to get it in time for the discussion. Sometimes I wait many years for a requested book. Just the other day I got one I'd requested 12 years ago, for instance. On the other hand, I get to keep the books for up to a year. I know of no other library with such a generous policy. Back in my student days, we often had to get library books for 24 hours only--and race back with them to avoid stiff fines.

LOL. My first reaction was just like Joyful's! Nothing, I'm sleeping! I'm like a couple of others here, the noise in my ears is plenty. But my noise is mostly like the Cicadas sound in the summer. But it doesn't keep me awake. I prefer quiet to sleep, no TV or radio, that would bother me more than the Tinnitus does. There is very little outside noise in this neighborhood to bother anyone. Very few cars passing. The Tinnitus doesn't usually bother me much. I guess I've gotten used to it over the years, my very own 'built in' white noise. Occasionally it will be loud enough, or annoying enough, to give me a headache, and even more occasionally, it will go away, or be so low it is almost unnoticeable. Rusty

I do not use iTunes or any Apple products. I still have my collection of CDs, but I have them stored in books so that they do not take up much space. I have ripped all my CDs (using Windows Media Player), and then I transfer the music I like best onto thumb drives that I take with me. I use a thumb drive at work and listen to music using Winamp (not my favorite program, but I've been using is for many years at work), and at home on my computer I use AIMP, another free program that I like better than Winamp. In the rest of the house, I plug a thumb drive into our sound system and listen to using through that, and in my car, I have a CD player (no USB port), and so I listen to MP3s that I have stored on a CD disc, which will hold quite a few. My brother got a new sound system for his truck that has a USB port, and so we use thumb drives for that. Neither my brother nor I like iTunes, and we both do sound editing on MP3s, which is easier to do than with iTunes. I refuse to buy anything from Apple. I do listen to the radio occasionally, as we have a good university station here in Westchester from Loyola Marymount: KXLU. The university is very close to the beach, and so a lot of the DJs sound like surfers and can be a bit ditzy, but I'm okay with that. My clock radio alarm is set to that station.

I am originally from Texas, where the mockingbird is the state bird, and we all enjoyed listening to him there. We moved to L.A. when I was 10, and there was a mockingbird that gave concerts just outside my bedroom window in the wee hours of the morning. He was a true virtuoso and gave me regular performances until I grew up and left home. We have mockingbirds in this area, but they tend to avoid urban areas, so I don't hear/see them on a regular basis any more.

Well it is after 12:30 AM here and there is one lonely birdie out there, evidently singing to himself, as no one is joining him in song.

Well for me the Mockingbird will always hold a special place in my heart...It is one of my fondest memories as a kid, there was always one in my yard and my father would whistle along with it. It was his favorite song bird!! The day we buried him a Mockingbird sat in the bush the entire mass...again at the cemetery there was one...I for one will never tire of hearing them!! Â¢Â¾

When we lived in St. Louis, MO we had a mockingbird that sang outside our bedroom window. I learned to appreciate its cyclic song. Miss hearing it now that we live in MN. Visited St. Louis a couple of weeks ago and was pleased to hear a mockingbird singing at my friend's home.

I love the mockers, it makes me laugh to hear the variety of sounds that they can make. And they sound so joyful when they sing....it reminds me that we are supposed to live each day filled with that same joy.....:-)

I love all birds...don't have many now due to too many feral cats that use my gardens for litter box and sleep in my flowerbeds on my flowers.

The Mockingbirds are fun; love to hear all the various noises they make and the hopping/winging they do when in search of food. One in our neighborhood makes the sound of a squeaky gate hinge. Two summers ago we were blessed with a family of 4; babies followed both parents begging for food.

The Western King Bird has arrived and entertains me while I sit in my back garden under the Hackberry...they dive from the utility lines after flying insects. They are a gutsy bird, taking on buzzards and hawks.

The Collared Doves are courting with daring dives from the top of utility poles.

I love Spring!!
