whatcha been doing this year 2010

I was just wondering what everybody is doing since it is spring time and tax time is over, birds singing, rain falling, grass growing and flowers blooming.

Looking or needing input from others on " WHATS HAPPENING" with ya this year???

I finished removing the last of our front lawn. :)

Who needs grass when you can have flowers and veggies instead!

The link below goes to a few short videos of the area taken about 3 weeks ago. All of the perennial flowers are lot taller now - guess I need to add "update videos" to my to do list.

Other garden work lately has been lots of weeding, watering and planting out this year's winter sown seedlings.

Im still cleanin up n starting seeds. Im so behind but ill get there, :) work kids n rain has slowed me down lol
My day off work n it stoped raining! kids are in school whoohoo! ill be gardening!

Did a bunch of wintersowing this year. First time trying, already transplanted marigolds, cosmos, thyme, assorted sedum,hens & chicks, aubrieta rock cress, euphorbia 'Kilimanjaro', ice plant, snow in summer, irish moss, golden currant bush, blue fescue and forget-me-not. Delphinium and rudbeckia are close. Took my spare seedlings to a plant swap, came back with sweet woodruff, four plugs of mystery columbine, more forget-me-not, a 6" tall pagoda dogwood seedling(!), and three variegated solomon's seal. When I planted a new serviceberry tree, I tried rooting eight suckers that I removed. I did this by sticking each one in a pot of dirt. My technique could certainly bear improvement, but as of yesterday I had two successes + one maybe. mzdee, thanks for the Lowes early bargain tipÃ¢ÂÂ¦last year's Lowes $3 clearance half-dead tiny Mugo Pine somehow survived winter and has impressive growing tips now. How did you get your petunias to come back?

I'm in Berkeley and it rarely has been over 70 degrees. Tumbling Tom has grown huge in spite of chewed half off by deer in May and I have gotten an occasional ripe cherry tomato off of it since 2 weeks ago. It must be setting less than 10% of its blossoms until recently. My Black Plums were also eaten half off by the same deer and they are just now turning yellow, but they seem to be setting a little higher percentage of the blossoms. These were both of my best producers last year. My San Francisco Fog is setting some fruit finally and the plant just started a growth spurt so it might have a good season. I planted some new ones for me like Sub-Arctic Plenty, but the deer erased them.

I started some from seeds a number of years ago quite early in winter under gro-lites and then moved them outdoors in late May in my cold zone MI garden, and I was amazed how big those vines got by the end of summer , even in very poor soil etc. though I'll admit I babied the heck out of them with tons of supplemental watering and fertilizer. The downside though, mine being the regular purple , just didn't seem to show of those blooms well, when the flowers in their third color stage, the dark purple , just didnt' contrast enough with the dark leaves to even show up well from a distance. A bit disappointing, that aspect of them, so I've not grown them again, but the white should be "brilliant" and show up beautifully. A matter of "taste" and personal perferrence on my part perhaps, and not the best eyesight, but I do like flowers to contrast well with foliage! BTW, as for size, I'd guess the vines grew fifteen to twenty feet by the end of summer, if you want to know how big they get. Annuals of course in your zone! It is interesting to note how the color changes for the regular ones, as they start almost a lime green, turning to a light blue-purple, and then to a very dark purple before they drop . Not long lived each individual flower however.

I made Dublin COddle a few years ago and though everyone ate it, they all said they would prefer the Corned Beef route so there you have it. They way I made it was Sausage, Ham, potatoes, cabbage, etc all sort of cooked together. So this year we are back to the traditional CB & C, with parsnips, carrots, onions... Irish Soda Bread on the side, probably a few Black & Tans, a tot of Bushmills for me and Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes for dessert. I made those last year for the first time and they were a huge hit! I'm growing some Mimosa pudica from seed. I was surprised to find them still viable after being lost in some boxes for a couple years. Soaked them in peroxide, and got about 80% germination rate.

And now I'm stressing out about buying wisteria sinensis seeds *sigh*

cleaning and replanting 3 garden rooms that have been neglected for 3-4 yrs. What a mess!....but I'm on the down-hill side now and can finally see some results other than itching from poison ivy.

I almost got the veg garden in. Im planting lots of flowers in with the veg this year. If only the weather would warm up and stop raining!
Im gonna kick butt on the starter/trading beds this year.
right now with all the rain im just making maps were to plant what, and all the fun stuff. :)

we, I started with all good intentions, winter-sowing some, had all the beds ready, seeds in the ground. Family emergency and I was away for 6 weeks. When I cam home there were weeds almost as tall as me. I have sooooo many red romaine that came up from last years plant (the one I let go to seed) and a few areas of mystery. My b-friend finished what he thought..... watered... and then started eating greens.
I hate to weed, my allergies hate it when I weed.
So,
I am busy playing with the new kitty,
teaching it to stay out of the raised beds and I wish I could go back in time, have a fairy put a green house in the back... a lot of summer left!

Well I'm late posting here but does gardening ever stop? This year I worked on getting the veggie garden up and running. I needed to get enough logs chopped down to create step garden beds. Then there was turning the rocky clay into wonderful garden soil but a judicious use of compost that I'm making. So far I have one tier done enough that I was able to plant lettuce. The rest is weeding, cutting the grass, select cutting trees, and moving everything from where it is to where I want it. But then that's always right?
