Need Quick Front Yard Ideas

Ok, My front yard is a mess, the summer is half way through. But I need something quick and inexpensive to do to my front yard.

I have rocks and a lot of weeds coming through. I need to get rid of these weeds as well.

Pick up the trash that "people" throw down and go buy a bottle of Round Up from any store including Walmart.
3.50 bottle of round up will really take care of all your problems, so buy 2 bottles.
If you really want flowers to water, buy a nice big planter or go to a flea market(you can find neat looking planters) and choose something funky for a planter, put Miracle Grow POTTING soil in the planter and buy some cheap petunias (pretty and they r easy to care for) and fill the planter with them.
Put the planter right by the fance on top of the stones if you want, in the sun.
If it dosn't rain for a week or more, just hand wter the petunias.
ROund up and petunias in pot if you want flowers.
Your yard will look great!

Water everything well. A few days later, spray roundup or other weed killer, being very careful not to touch the plants you want to keep. (Cover the good plants with plastic bags or buckets if you must.) A week later, remove all the dead weeds and apply a pre-emergent herbicide such as Amaze or Preen to all the areas, rocks, and cracks where weeds have grown. Read the labels and follow all the directions carefully. Should any weeds germinate, remove them immediately before they can go to seed and start the cycle of weeds again. You will probably have to apply this regimen at least three times before the problem is under control.

It looks like there is landscape fabric under the rocks. It's hard work, but getting rid of the rocks and landscape fabric would be a major step in the right direction. Put the gravel in buckets and give it away. Trash the landscape fabric or plastic. Put down layers of cardboard or newspaper on the bare ground and cover with a very thick (6 inches) layer of mulch. Ta da! Weeds under control, and soil getting more healthy. After you accomplish that task you might actually want to spend more time in your garden.

KY2011, a plan will not be useful to you in creating a landscape design unless it is accurately drawn--with the distances being measured--and your's is not. One 16' distance is shown at more than 3 times the length of an 8' distance and many other measurements are obviously not proportionately correct. You'll can print out a scale that will allow you to measure the distances. (Link below. Use the inch-decimal--sixth one down--to create a plan that is 1" = 10". That will probably work the best. Be sure to disable "shrink to fit" when you print.) The measured plan allows one to fit in objects that are also measured ... to make sure that there is room for everything and that one has placed enough objects (plants) in the plan. It allows one to see that the distances between objects are properly proportioned, for best use of the space being created. This brings up another point that plants shown in your plan are not well or realistically arranged. Some are too close to the house, but too far from one another in the rows. The "bump-out" portion of the building is not shown, so plants march across the front of the house as if it weren't there. This will not work in real life. The Japanese maple could not be placed as you have it. That's a space sized for a Hosta. (The 6' - 8' ht. you've marked is at one stage of its life, but is not its end height.) A nice landscape uses plants to solve problems and create a positive image. It's not just placing one's favorite decorations (plants) wherever they can be squeezed in around the yard. There's no reason a homeowner can't do their own landscape design, if they're willing to use the methods professionals use and also learn a lot about plants. I suggest that you draw an accurate plan and re-post (without plants shown.) Then you could probably get suggestions for better plant placement. You should also be thinking about what architectural shortcomings need enhancing by plants. The size of the house has been mentioned. You've also mentioned the "concrete at the porch," but it's far enough away that it doesn't look any different than the siding, and and I don't get the impression you're anxious to hide that. While its finish at close range might not be the greatest, couldn't some paint take care of it?. Why not start with that and see if you detest it as much? One person mentioned hiding the bottom of the stone facade. (A vine on a custom trellis or a clipped hedge could take care of it with the least bulk.) What about hiding the bottom of the "bump-out." With no architectural devices appearing to support it (same as stone facade) it looks like it defies the laws of nature and so would be better hidden. Street trees help frame the house (as well as provide a protective ceiling at the street) so why not pick ones that can be more readily limbed up in order to create the view below? If you don't do the things that need be done, you'll end up with the typical "builder's landscape" ... something to rip out just as soon as, or shortly after it becomes grown. I just redid our entire front yard (1600 sqft) in DG and awesome low water plants and succulents for $957 by doing the work myself. I got a lot of the plants from a succulent guy that sells at the Rose Bowl flea market (nice large unusual echeverias for $6, smaller for $1-3 including the bright ruffled ones as well as lots of other succulents and cacti,) and "death row" at Lowe's (the clearance racks- I cut them back and nursed them to health while doing the sod removal and killing the remaining grass.) We only spent a lot of the 3 large focal point plants ($129 for a large Hercules aloe, $40 for a large red pencil stick tree and $28 for a larger Madagascar palm with 10 pups in the pot- I cut off 8 and am rooting them to add later.) The other large expense was good landscape cloth and pins, about $250 of the total cost (must be water permeable to qualify for the rebate, no plastic.) The turf replacement rebate here in Riverside is $2 a sqft so the check I get back will cover 100% of what we spent. Definately check and see if you have a rebate program in your area- they have to inspect before you start so don't start ripping anything out until you talk to them! We went with DG not only for the look but because mulch is very ant/ bug friendly and because it breaks down so it is a continual expense- you have to add to it every year to keep it looking decent. The DG was $40 a yard. With your need for a play are you could keep the area on the side for a play area and do the main part of the yard with the $500. Need quick help choosing a tree for my front yard from a list of six.

Wow!!! Thanks everyone for offering your ideas, insights and helpful information! I'm so very grateful for the time you took to help me learn about the trees and to give me some factors to consider based on weather, tree characteristics, and my home's size & scale!! As a point of clarification, the trees are not free. Residents pay 25% (approx. $80) and the Village pays 75% (approx. $270). I have not yet talked to anyone in the forester's office, but I don't think I have a choice other than their list for planting in the parkway. Technically the parkway is Village property; so that's why they pay the majority. If I wanted to plant another type of tree, I'd likely need to plant that in my yard. The front yard is so small, I wouldn't want a tree smack in the middle of the yard, plus...with all the other projects currently on the list, I appreciate the lower cost point for me to add a tree or two. Upon reviewing my list closer, the Kentucky Coffee being offered is the Espresso, which I've learned is seedless, which is helpful. I totally understand and even appreciate that trees are messy. :-D I'm someone who enjoys raking and greatly values all the seasons. I love watching the life cycle of nature, including the leaves coming into bud and then falling. The "messy" concern is knowing some trees do tend to drop even more debris and/or can be a bit problematic with their seeds, berries, etc. As one who also loves the bees, butterflies and birds...some berries and seeds are lovely as they help sustain my flying friends. This afternoon I connected with a local arborist who is coming to trim a few trees in the backyard. He echoed many of the comments listed above. So....after reading all of your feedback, considering the arborist's comments and tuning into my own heart voice, I've ranked my choices to the Village in the following order (The form asks us to rank each 1-6) 1 - Espresso Kentucky Coffee 2 - Common Hackberry 3 - Red Sunset Red Maple 4. Frontier Elm 5. Ivory Silk Japanese Lilac (While this is available for everyone, I think this one added as a choice for homes that are near overhead utility wires - based on a note on the form) 6. Exclamation London Planetree Again! I greatly appreciate everyone's time and assistance! If there are any final comments, I'm sure I could wiggle my selection based on availability up until the end of March. :-D Thank you!!

It doesn't appear that the wanted pathway will be affected by the position of the stump. It will be close but isn't directly in the way. Not every path has to be dug deeply into the soil. You need only dig out enough soil to remove the grass. The simplest pathway would be to set stepping stones directly into the grass. Or, buy more of the scallop-top concrete border and lay it from either side of the gate to the front of the border. Cover the soil between with a weed barrier landscape fabric that allows moisture to pass through, then cover that with gravel. Continue the path to the right in front of the porch in the same manner until it intersects the main entrance walkway. I recommend a crushed stone gravel as being more stable to walk on than a rounded gravel. However, concrete tiles or paving stones can also be placed down the middle of the path for walking ease. Where the tree is planted depends on how big it will get. What does the tag say? Regardless, don't plant any tree close to underground utilities, which can eventually be damaged by roots.

planters ditto, as a front yard, make sure they are big planters and difficult to "make off" with I would keep the stone but get rid of plastic and start again with either cardboard and mulch followed by the stones as I think they look pretty, or new plastic and stones.
You have a really pretty fence, which would look lovely with trellising or hanging plants kind of spilling over and through, just don't block the walk way! that is so annoying when you have a stroller! LOL

Hello I have noticed that your garden looks so dull and lonely (please don't get mad) I think you have to put some color to add beauty and heather38 said it right your fences are so beautiful you can put some hanging plants too. I hope to see your newly designed garden and your flowers in bloom in your next post. Thanks.

I would also second the motion to remove the rocks annd plastic, if there is any underneath. As already mentioned, it is not the quickest and easiest task, but it can make maintenance easier in the long run.

Where I live, most of the seasonal garden centers are now closing down for the winter, with plants going at greatly-reduced prices. This could be an opportune time for you to purchase additional plants for your yard, if you have an idea with where you would like to go in the long run.

How large is your front yard? From the pictures you have provided, it does not appear to be quite deep. Depending on its size, going for a completely-planted front yard can be both striking and not arduous to maintain.
