Why can't my mini plot qualify?

Maybe I am flogging a dead horse, but I need some kind of answer.

I have many 15gal containers with veggies growing. I also have a huge 32 gal compost bin almost ready. Anyway, recently I was digging around in the veggies, and I disturbed a lot of earthworms. My containers are sitting on an earth plot. Also, lots of creatures in the soil. Now, I am thinking: could I mix in my compost (when ready) since it has good critters living in the containers?

Maybe the soil contains the micro....(cannot remember the word)that the compost needs to work with.

Someone on the forum said that compost (organic) doesn't really work with containers bz it needs something or other to be effective. By now you all should gather that I am really wanting this compost process to work with my containers veggies.

I have frogs large and small, lizards large and small, worms, ants, et al living in my plants because they are all in pots that sit on soil in the garden. Doesn't my garden plot qualify? Please....pretty please!!!!

It's all of those wonderful and busy microorganisms that make compost a problem in containers. What do those little guys do? They decompose all of the solids in the compost and turn it into smaller and smaller and smaller bits. In fact, the final stages of a good compost are elemental and can't even be seen with the naked eye.

The earthworms contribute to the breakdown of all of those solids, too. Good in the real soil, but not in containers.

Before very long, you end up with a substance that is not conducive to rapid water drainage and gas exchange. Within the confines of a container, compost turns into something our plants cannot thrive in.

If I had a 32 gallon bin full of compost, I'd be anxious to turn it out into the garden soil, where it could do some real good, rather than going to waste in my containers.

If you are really sold on the idea of using compost and other quick to break down ingredients in containers, turn them into mini raised beds. Just make a large drain hole and when filling the container press the contents firmly onto the soil below (in other words make sure there is physical contact between the earth and the container contents).

You have now resolved the drainage issue that can result when using fine particled ingredients in a container.

Crud!! That certainly makes sense as we did have several significant freeze / thaw cycles here in Western Washington. Which, by the way, is not typical. We usually don't have much in the way of a "hard" freeze here in the Puget Sound region but this has been a VERY hard winter replete with inches of SNOW and weeks of FROZEN ground! Poor little Minnow and TÃªte-Ã -TÃªte's. :( I feel like a murderer!! Wish I had read up on bulbs in pots a little more thoroughly. Thanks for the information. Much appreciated. :)

Holy weak coffee, Tisha! Sweetie, I've got to side with the Pirate on this one... wow. I'd be clutching my head in caffeine withdrawal after coffee like that. But then I use those one-or-two cup stove-top espresso makers for my morning jolt. Other end of a caffeine addict's spectrum. Ming, the difference in taste might be due more to the brewing method than to incompetency on your part :) Most coffee joints percolate coffee (rather than drip or press), and that gives coffee a richer flavour. You can invest in a percolator, but those tend to be pretty pricy. I've found that the best way to mimic that perc-ed taste is to make my coffee in a stove-top espresso maker (they're little silver thingies, and run about $20), and to use a rich, full-bodied (but not acidic) bean - Sumatran or a French Roast of almost any bean are favourites, but I've also found most Ethiopian coffees work well, too. If you go to a health food store, you'll probably find descriptions of the various types of coffee on the bin, so you can avoid anything acidic, and look for descriptions like "full-bodied," "rich blend," etc. Also a lot of "breakfast blends" tend to be rich, without being overwhelming. You can't use cold water for a french press - too bad for that, I say, since icy coffee is so yummifying in the summer, and the wait time for coffee to cool is such a hassle! But you CAN add cinnamon to your coffee - just add a teaspoon or less to the ground beans when you go to make a pot. It'll change the taste, of course, and if you don't like cinnamon or are a coffee purist, then this tip is not for you. But I find that cinnamon adds depth to what might otherwise be a pretty lackluster coffee - you know, old and stale or bitter beans... that kind of thing. Good luck with your coffee experimentation! It's kind of fun, eh? Oh yeah! Sometimes, the cream you use can alter the taste of your coffee! If my cream isn't fresh, even if it hasn't ~really~ gone bad yet, then my coffee tastes SO bitter. In April I received a mini rose from a friend and I tried to keep it in the house for my enjoyment. However, no amount of watering carefully, full light or not kept it from declining. It started to get yellow leaves and dry up. Towards the midddle of May I took it and planted it in a big pot on my patio with some violets and gave it some rose food. It is now Aug. and my yellow rose is beautiful. It has been blooming almost since the time I planted it outdoors. I planted it on the east side of the house so it gets full sun in the morning and shade later in the afternoon and evening. Now I just need to figure out how to keep it over the cold months.

I've been growing roses - big and little, inside for many years but it is no job for the faint of heart. They are easy to grow outside but a real challenge in the house. For one thing, they are prone to spider mite which thrives in a hot dry environment that has none of the predators it gets ouside. You can cope with it by wrapping a paper towel around the base of the plant to keep the dirt in the pot,inverting the pot in the kitchen sink and washing off the underside with cold water - preferably using the hose attachment on the sink. It has to be done several times a week to wash those little beasties right down the drain. I can't do that with big roses so use Avid - not all that poisonous to people (about as bad as table salt) but quite expensive to start with - use 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of spray (a few drops to a quart squeeze sprayer). it kills mites dead but has to be repeated several times to get newly hatched mites. Signs of spider mite: light stipples on leaves; webs underneath leaves (bad infestation); leaves look like they are drying up. Roses require a lot of light. A south window is best though southwest or south east will do it. Otherwise you will need supplemental lights. Best to fertilize very lightly and wait until rose is growing strongly to do it. Any liqud fertiizer will do but I generally use half strength. Haven't had blackspot inside - leaves have to be wet for it to grow. It is possible to have mildew - best remedy is a dishwashing detergent solution - just wash the stuff off with soapy water. Supermarket roses are forced for bloom and are likely to drop all their leaves when in the house - so much different from greenhoue atmosphere. They will get new leaves but patience is necessary. A good idea to stand the pots in trays on gravel and put water in trays to increase humidity. Important not to over-water - they can't grow in water-logged soil. Good luck!

For what it's worth, I grow vegetables in containers filled with homemade compost and they do well. I also amend the potting mix in my outdoor planters with compost. The plants are thriving.

Now if drainage is going to be a problem bz particles are too small bz of micro activities, can I add gravel or perlite to aid in drainage?

Something else I thought of. If the worms and the other critters in my pots are doing their work, my container soil hasn't broken down to the point where drainage is bad. Everything drains well. Do they work on ordinary potting mix also? Please don't think me naive, but all the pots have critters. I have grasshoppers and snails and lizards and ants over all these years in my back patio. I see the worms in my compost too. What the harm?

There is no harm in having worms in the compost or grasshoppers, snails, lizards and ants on the patio.

The potential harm to using compost in your container complete with a collection of composting critters is simply that they will reduce the volume and particle size fairly quickly over the season.

If you are OK with that then you are OK with that.

This became the issue for me when I used compost in my peat/perlite mix. The compost continued to break down and eventually caused the potting mix to collapse and compact. This was definitely not good and I will not be using the compost in my containers in the future specifically for this reason.
