Low Water Flowers in pot with Palm

I bought a Mexican Blue Fan Palm, Brahea Armata, and have potted it in a large unsealed cement pot with modified Gritty Mix. I removed about 2/3 of the nursery mix and potted it in 50% fine Fir Bark, 30% Turface, 10% fine Gravel, 10% Pumice. This is the same mix I've used for some other palms that are from arid regions.

AFTER that I've decided I want to add a bit of color to the pot like the picture below. BTW, I don't know why this pic shows the palm being green/blue as they are actually blue/gray. I'm just looking at adding a bit of flowers that stay low and spill over the edge of the pot. I don't want to add something upright surrounding the trunk of the palm.

I'm concerned about a low water trailing plant that will not fill up the pot. I'm willing to put them in their own plastic pot under the soil line if that is best.

Any suggestions? I'm clearly clueless about flowers.

The picture is taken from the website PlanetHorticulture.com, which has some excellent information.
