Ahh, you are so right. Very soothing and cool. Especially enjoyable as we are in the midst of a heat wave.

Thanks for the pics. I miss those summer northern days when we would hop over the border to Toronto and DH would join your great jazz musicians on stage and I would set out to enjoy the gardens and parks of the area. You live in a city of fine horticulture, magnificant architecture and creative landscape design.

Which reminds me...how did your little city park design end up? What did you learn from that exercise? Designing for public use is always a challenge.

What courses will you be taking this fall? Some of we old-timers on this Forum are always interested in your creative young mind and ideas. An update, please!

'bug, great class photo-looks like a Kousa behind you? Mine didn't flower as heavily. Seems to be sort of a pattern in my yard. I have never seen a Catalpa bloom-how pretty! Your picture of the field is spectacular. What I wouldn't give to look out and see space like that! I am going to have to have a talk with my one clematis. Really, it's not doing the same job as all of yours. Maybe a replacement or a challenger for the space is what is needed. Cindy, ah, so you are the one who brought us this weather! Well done and many thanks, friend! I have been enjoying it and getting some weeding done. That is an exercise in futility around here, I'm afraid. Oh well. Candy, I think your plumbago and hosta look great. Is that Tradescantia next to the Hosta? Mine is much more leggy and sparse. Are you beginning to get a sense of how pathetic my garden is at this point? :( Kathy, glad you are able to ease back into things this week. Enjoy that long weekend. BTW, I am going to start a savings account-special fund: IU8! Where have you all gone in the past? Guess I should get back to weeding. I really need to add more plants or have the ones already planted grow more quickly. Or maybe it is just that I never got mulch down this year. If I can get everything cleaned out a bit, maybe I can convince DH to lug some bags to the car and then around the yard so I can just open and dump. We'll see. Chelone, hope the end of the week is better for you. Drema, a month-long IU sounds marvelous-especially out there with Kathy. All those pictures are so enticing.!

Thanks for the comments everybody. RDH and Anne; Borderer is small and has amazing colored blooms that some liken to a miniature Abraham Darby. They don't last long, a day or so, but there are lots of them. I grow mine in a pot wintered in a cold room. Not sure if it will winter outdoors in zone 5. Went out just after the morning sun had a chance to warm the blossoms in order to do some fragrance evaluations, particularly with respect to The Reeve as requested. The Reeve has a moderately strong sweet fragrance with just a hint of myrrh to my nose. It is quite unique and pleasantly soft. It is not a strong myrrh, a mere trace, only a soupÃÂ§on. David Austin describes the fragrance as: "strong old rose"; I would disagree. Claire Martin says: "strong and musky". Neither description is very useful. However, if by musky we mean very pleasant, and sweetly compelling, then I would concur. Hope that helps. Since I was out and about and there are more roses opening, please forgive me for posting a few more images. The Yeoman, a very early Austin, 1969. A 4th year band from RVR. Still small and delicate, requires coddling, but building stature. The flowers are gorgeous and the fragrance delightful. A collector rose. The Pilgrim, just opened this morning, strong Tea Rose fragrance and oh so gorgeous. And a new spray of Geoff Hamilton; love the petal packed cups, soft pink and sweetly fragrant An image of Claire Rose, 1986. The blooms of this rose are oft compared to those of Souvenir de la Malmaison and there is a resemblance, though I like CR better and it is certainly more cold hardy for those like me who can't grow the tender SDLM. And finally an old image of Jayne Austin for Boncrow. This is my best image of her. She is like a winter hardy Noisette in my view. Her fragrance is unique, a bit of tar and tobacco infused into Tea Rose, I've also heard it called "phenolic". Sounds awful doesn't it. But its not, Jayne is one I like to carry in my pocket just so I can take the bloom out to stick my nose into.

I started to map my shady areas this morning but couldn't maintain focus. I know the shade pattern has changed over the years since my first shade study in 2006 but since everything is going gangbusters, I'm guessing the plants don't really care/have adapted themselves to their growing conditions. I did plant some winter sown Dianthus, dig out & pot up a handful of volunteer Virginia knotweed seedlings.

Dedtired - I'm happy to report we had the same weather on our side of the Delaware River. We had a late start this year to cleaning off our screened porch. It does get amazingly dusty over the winter and we had company coming on Saturday afternoon for a crab feast. Friday was beautiful - no humidity, no heat so we finally took the furniture off the porch, hosed it down and it air dried quickly. Everything was back in place by noon. Saturday was even better. DH rigged our smoker to accommodate the steamer so we were able to cook everything outside. DS bought the crabs in S. Philly, DD hit the Reading Terminal for prosciutto, melons, Tiramisu and cannolis. It was a glorious day. The kids brought their dogs to play and we tried to get them to join us in the pool but only our lab came in. If only we had more summer days like these.

Culture: found this info for Artemesia "Silvermound"
...full sun to partial sun
...placement in moist, well-drained, relatively infertile soils in full sun prevents excessive vertical vegetative growth, which will usually prevent the center of the foliage mound from unattractively opening up and separating by mid-Summer.
...if placed in fertile soils, the foliage may grow from 1' to 1.5' tall; in this case, clump splitting can be prevented or delayed by shearing the foliage back halfway in July, before flowering begins.
...tolerant of poor soils, dry soils, heat, and drought.
...propagated by crown division or by rooted stem cuttings.
...Daisy Family, with stem rot or foliage rust under humid conditions being the two primary disease problems, and with no significant pest problems.

This type does quite well in the lower hardiness zones; here with the shorter growing season, it stays perfectly mounded and reaches a size between a soccer and a basketball with no center flopping.

It's the stem rot that gets me every time I (foolishly) try to grow it. I gave up for good (or so I tell myself!) about five years ago. I had it in poor, lean, well drained soil (heck, it was in POT for goddess's sake!) and it rotted out on me anyway.

Since there are things I can grow here that I can't grow in Ohio, I am content.
