How to fill in an area around a pool

I have an inground pool and I need to fill in the area around it. There is a concrete deck all the way around the pool but the ground around the pool slopes away from it and needs to be filled. On three sides it only needs to be filled 6" - 12" deep. On the fourth side the ground slopes considerably and needs to be filled up to 3 feet in places to make the ground level.

On the three sides where the depth is 6" - 9", can I just add top soil and add grass seed or a flower bed (mulch & plants) or do I need to add some sort of fill?

If I need to fill, what do I use?

On the fourth side, I will need to fill it - what do I use? Can I just get some sort of rocks? I don't know the difference between rip rap, clay fill, clean fill etc. I intend to finish it off with topsoil and grass.

Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks!!!
