Front entrance design ideas

Hello,

I would like to update the front of my house with a new entry way and some plantings. I'd like to give the entry way some more depth and dimension but I don't want to go so far as to build a roof over it. Any ideas?

Well your long flat uninteruppted roof line makes it easy to look right over the front door, so I think you already know the answer to your question.

Some other ideas:
Painting the front door a brighter color would make it stand out also

Put matching evergreen shrubs on either side of the door. Can't tell from your photo if there is any room or not. If no open ground then use pots.

Line the stoop with a different type of material, like brick to stand out from the foundation.

If you can enter from the front of the porch, you might use a ready made trellis or a pergola - in the proper proportion to your home. Is the step to the left of the porch? if so a pergola would work. You might want to move the mailbox out further with the new structure. And painting the door another color would make a huge difference. A wooden planter box to the right would also give the entry a more anchored look.

Thank you for your comments! The house is painted brick. And I live in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. I love perennial gardens and would have no problem doing the whole front and back yards...I will remove the bushes at the front of the house and get the trees trimmed to start. I am thinking wider steps myself as well.

I like the idea of removing the left side steps. But I would put a railing there. I would also add a railing along the steps. Don't plant tall plants. They will hide the windows. The current ones need to be prune to reduce their size. I would make it an interesting garden. Maybe add a water feature or sculpture.

Yep. Just extend the roof out to the align with the garage roof. If the peak is to the right of the front door, just extending the roof to the left is a nice modern approach. if the peak doesnt relate to the front elevation in a logical way, extend the whole thing. edited: Im on my phone waiting for a childs knitting lesson, so please forgive the terrible drawing :-) This is what i mean. If yiu dont like MCM then this might not be yiur taste. i agree with removing the shutters. By covering the porch, nothing will grow well, so you could expand the front step between the front door and the garage wall with an elevated patio…

Thanks again for the new ideas and comments. I've already been shot down on bringing in a taller column and decreasing the size of the front, but he did say we would work on some sort of solution. The other two like houses I guess the owners didn't mind since they have already moved in, and they did nothing to change this front. The idea that @Jon Alan posted with the trim and multiple layers is a realistic option. We don't want to do a mounted light since there will be a large hanging lantern installed on the porch.
