Front entrance- low pitch roofline- coverage ideas over front door
I am waiting to add a portico or awning of sorts over our front door/stoop to shield people from rain/snow, unfortunately, we have low pitched roof so don't know if typical portico would look right. Any ideas/drawings would be appreciated.

But it would have to be done in a proportionate manner so it doesn't overwhelm the facade. They got away with it here because the garage is set back from the main house.Related Discussions

Actually, this is the original stoop to the house that we're remodeling this year. We had a contractor over and he kept complaining because the concrete platform sits uncomfortably low under the door, the distance obviously not up to code, so he built this for us on a whim...a temporary wooden step. I painted it and threw some of that rough tape on it to prevent us from slipping....LOL...it's really a pathetic looking thing, but temporary. Trust me, I can't wait to see it go. Especially after seeing your beautiful Teak! BTW - that's my old dog Cody (17 yrs) and the Chi is my beloved Chewy - I had to put Chewy down this past weekend due to congestive heart failure. Comments (27)What an adorable house, Enjoyingspring! I like black or charcoal shutters, and I would paint the foundation a color that matches, as closely as you can get, the brick. If the colors do not contrast, it makes the house appear taller and more spacious. I would consider not having the house number on the house, but instead at the street next to the driveway, perhaps a black wrought iron thing that you stick in the ground. Comments (11)The house is only 10 years old and we actually just bought the house 8 months ago. We decided to live in it (as built) for 6 months and then make a list of things we'd like to change before breaking out the hammers and recip saw. The entry way is top of the list as the tiny tile area just doesn't work for us. We live in the snow-belt and while we have a huge porch, snow still makes its way inside and onto the floor. We refinished the hardwood before we moved in and it was very evident that the previous owner also had issues with the small entry... most of the polyurethane finish was worn near the front entry tiles and in front of the hall closet. I agree that the boxed beams are a good idea to visually separate... I'm really just contemplating the need for a column as it doesn't really fit with the openness of the remainder of the main floor. In terms of furnishings, we both like to read and a quiet reading area with a pair of comfy ekornes recliners away from the living room sounds perfect. Another open question is whether to put the closet into the room, or bump out the wall. We do have space in the north-east side of the house, and the bump out would be in the direction of the floor joists travel. Comments (26)I am a landscaper so I see your solution in what you want to do in the outdoors rather than indoors. If you love the idea of a cottage garden, create one with a meandering path that leads to the door you want to enter. Using plantings for the different seasons you can make it a real pleasure for you or anyone else to be directed to whichever entrance you like. I have seen this done on several projects I have worked on to wonderful effect - granted these are people who have professional designers and landscapers, but you could pull it off with a little investment and investigation. Find images of cottage gardens you like and observe how they interface with foot traffic and entryways. If you do this right, it can add significant value to your home. Just make sure you have a good master plans that takes into account realistic traffic needs and seasons (how will i feel lugging in groceries, kids, grandma, going through bad weather, etc) Be honest with yourself about the compromises you will have to live with - farther from the car, mud? snow?s I love the idea of making your side door the main entrance! last yearlast modified: last yearWayfair has a great variety of black and clear porticoes. Here are a couple that won't require complicated installation. Do a search using "front door awnings and porticoes." I agree that you should remove the bitty shutters for a cleaner look.

last yearlast modified: last yearAfter you decide on portico, spend time on creating new landscaping to enhance the house so that you don't need shutters to do the job. Extending front garden beds with low foundation plants would look great! Keep in mind that you have beautiful huge windows. From the inside, think about creating an indoor garden of tall and medium plants at the window to blend indoors and outdoors.
Oh, you'll forget all about your shutters if you paint your front door a bright color--tomato red, yellow, cobalt blue.
