Front Porch Makeover - Please Advise (Pictures)
Comments (14)I don't mind the ironwork, but I don't love it. Is is structural, or just there for decoration? It doesn't appear to be structural, and it bothers me because it is not centered on the entry area or the stairs. I think teacat's suggestion of taking them down and using them on the left between the two windows as a trellis is a great idea, tho I would paint them white. If you decide to keep them where they are, I would paint them white. I wouldn't add columns - wrong for the house, imo. I would prefer to see the porch open, if possible. A bench to the left of the door, house numbers in a decorative plaque above it. No coach light - wrong for the style and period of the house. I think the overhead light at the door is more effective, anyway. I would also consider painting the sills on the windows in white to match the windows and other trim. I think it would give them more weight. Once you get rid of the ironwork, I think the pots will work well. But they need some greenery hanging over the edges, to connect the vertical lines of the evergreens to the pot, and not have the gap. Perhaps the bench could have a cushion with some red in it as well. Sometime I hope you might consider painting the front door a pretty eggplant or teal, or even a deep golden yellow color. It would be stunning. Then you could bring in the bench in white, with a colorful cushion in a sixties print with the door color, black from the shutters, and some white in it. At that point you might have to change the color of the pots to black....See MoreFront entry needs overhaul design ideas please.
Comments (12)In the bed to the right of the front door (as you're facing the door) a small tree in the middle of that bed would really be nice. Maybe something 10-12' tall and wide. It would add needed height and anchor the bed. Then, plant things that provide seasonal display, some amount of fragrance, and bring color to that area. Google Monrovia, click on your zone and look at their suggestions for plants in your zone. Look on the web for examples of front yard landscaping and just copy those ideas. Comments (4)An architect would be a good idea. You may be able to extend the roofline from the upper story toward the front door, acting as a porch roof. Then build a wider porch, perhaps using the bricks you'll remove from the planter. An arborist can help with identifying the trees that would best be removed. Will this be your personal residence or will you be selling when finished with the remodel?...See MoreNeed advise for front of house design
Comments (21)You could add a front porch with a forward facing gable roof from halfway between the entry door and the window to the left of it that extends to the right front corner of the home. You could then move the front door out to the exterior wall enabling it to both be protected from the elements and let in light -- even more light if you add glass to the peak of the gable skylights to its roof. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/667799450970047461/ https://www.pinterest.com/pin/53339576821620149/?lp=true https://www.google.com/search?biw=1328&bih=617&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=pN7FXYWQA-3A5gKshZaACQ&q=wide+forward+facing+gable+roof+porch+on++ranch+style+house&oq=wide+forward+facing+gable+roof+porch+on++ranch+style+house&gs_l=img.12...42706.43029..44839...0.0..0.84.162.2......0....1..gws-wiz-img.F_TFNzPgHck&ved=0ahUKEwiF8uqDyNvlAhVtoFkKHayCBZAQ4dUDCAY#imgrc=awZSkIL5bKPWzM:&spf=1573248722337...See MoreAiFL
