Trying to fix my mistakes, please help

My hubby is a grass lover and I a grass lover. He totally balked when I wanted to put a mixed bed in the front. Our compromise was a narrow strip that runs in a straight line along the sidewalk.

We planted daylilies in the front in a long line. Behind the daylilies are coreopsis, lamb's ear, and shasta daisies. Behind the perennials are knockout rose shrubs.

Well, fast forward 5 years and 2 kids. My hubby is on board now with changing things, and I want to make the bed look more complete. I think it needs some stuff behind it. Maybe some evergreen bushes? What looks good behind knockout roses?

Also, the bed is just a straight line running along the sidewalk. I need to change that but am not sure how.

I will try to post pics when I get a chance, but it is storming tonight. Thanks for any suggestions. :)
