Yellow fronds after potting in 5-1-1

Ive repotted about 10 of my houseplants in the 5-1-1 potting mix and on 1 Kentia an Areca and a palour palm im getting 1 or 2 yellow fronds, typically a lower smaller frond (s) is turning yellow then brown and dying, is there an obvious reason for this?

It could just be in shock from being repotted. Some plants will do that, and will do fine after the initial shock from being transplanted. I've had plants do that before and they turned out fine after. Just trim off the dead leaves other than that your plants look beautiful.

My pleasure, Tropical! These ferns divide their own crowns as they grow, spreading out in different directions. Also, I have already pruned out the fronds that were crispy brown and dead from Winter. The colder foothill temps lead to a sparse, haggard looking fern during the early Spring. But once the season is underway, the new growth will come in much more lush and compact. Rina, about the difference in container sizes...if you look at the 8th pic, you can see the root-mass of the fern sitting on top of the mix in the new container. That root-mass is the exact size of the previous container, and it shows how much smaller it was! I'm hoping for maximum growth! ;-) Josh

Thanks Rob. I picked up a bag of the peat moss I showed a picture of but haven't used it yet. Day 5 and plant looks about the same. I guess that's good. No dying or yellow leaves...yet Top always seems dry, but I wait to water until the bottom terra-cotta looks dry, about every other day. Watering with about 1 gallon of 1/4 strength FP to soak everything. Water drains like my bowels dealing with Montezuma's Revenge :O

Adrian, thank you so much for your helpful post. Your plants look so healthy and happy! Do I understand you to say that the bark fines is for moisture retention in the potting mix? If so, I have a huge pile of rotted oak leaf mold. I wonder if that would work as a replacement for the bark fines? I stuck a few collard seedlings on one side of this pile of leaf mold last fall and the plants are about 4 ft high, with no amendments added. They're just growing in the leaf mold so I guess it is draining well yet retaining enough moisture to keep the plants growing. I have read and read the various threads about the potting mix but I'm still not sure what each of the ingredients do. I've never grown tomatoes, actually never grown any veggies. My experience is with native plants. The collard plants were my first venture into veggie gardening and that went well so thought I'd like to try growing some fresh tomatoes. I guess, if my potting mix turns out to be bad, I've not lost much other than a growing season. I don't really have room for in ground veggie gardening so I must try some type of container gardening. I use ProMix for my seedlings but I can't justify the cost to use it to fill a lot of 20 gal pots. I will check with the nurseries and see what they have in bulk. transplant shock makes sense ill go with that :)

All my plants ive transplanted in to the 5-1-1 apart from the yellowing are showing postive signs, im getting lots of new growth, ive got lots of Spears coming up on my palms, I came back from my hols yesterday and found 2 spears on 1 of my Kentias had fully opened in a week, that was the kentia I was forced to do abit of root work on to get it potted properly so I was very happy.

Are you fertilizing regularly?

Also, how close to the 5-1-1 is your mix?
That first pic looks peaty, but I can't see much detail.

Ive added crf with micro in to the mix at the recommended strength then ive watered them all in well and watered them twice more all with clean water (ro) then yesterday ive introduced water soluble fertilizer with micro at half strength recommend, I will continue with that for possibly 1-2 more waterings then up to recommend, I am slightly curious about when to water tho, I know in peat potting mixes you should wait until the top inch or 2 is dry for most plants would that be the same in 5-1-1 or should I water more frequently?
The ratio of peat is 1 to 5 parts bark and 1 part perlite, I think it looks dark cause the bark is wet, in that mix the bark I used was very dark (untreated) I later managed to get hold of proper potting bark, it was really hard to get hold of lol

After a recent re-potting, you do want to keep the mix more evenly moist so that roots in the upper inches do not dry out and die. Once those roots are established, then you can let the mix dry out more between waterings. The yellow older leaves are probably the result of shock, as mentioned, and possibly an interruption in the availability of nutrients. If you have the plants on a fertilizer regimen now, they should do just fine.
