Anyone in Zone 7 still waiting for asparagus?

Maybe I am wrong but I thought that my asparagus came up in early March last year. My very small bed is probably 7 years old, and produced well last year. I also chose to be extremely conservative in harvesting last year, so I know it was not overharvested.

I'm in South Central PA, and my 'gus has been up for 3 or 4 days...probably 20-25 spears showing. Sudden cool snap has slowed them down though.

Mine are up. Been harvesting for about 4 days too. Any rain lately? If not, give it a good watering as that seems to kick start it.

Thank you everyone! I know these took awhile to type up but I really do appreciate the feedback! Nanadoll, glad someone is growing Ascot! Definitely will have to give mine some more space than planned as I have it against the house where it stays quite warm. Also, Do you grow your Golden Celebration on a trellis or self standing? Seil, you are the reason I have ordered Angel Face. The photos of yours are just wonderful! You say yours is very hardy, thus can I expect little cane dieback? The space I have it planned for gets quite windy. Secondly, I will definitely need to find a new place for Memorial Day if it gets 6-8 feet so I am glad you mentioned it. Also, I was under the impression that Cherry Parfait and Fire & Ice are the same rose (HMF has the names linked I believe). Are the two you mention very different? I currently have Fire & Ice ordered and I see Regan lists them seperately. Odd. Thank you for the tip of Dublin Bay! I might plant a low one in front of it to cover the bottom. Kate, Regarding my list, I am sure I will be on here complaining after spring planting but the catalogs kept on coming! Thankfully I started digging holes in the fall and got through some, now just need to watch the dogs out in the yard with the snow cover so they don't accidently fall in! Thank you for the thorn tip on Elina, will need to stick her in the back so I can prune things in front without getting stuck. Also glad you mentioned WS2000 - I definitely did not have it planned for a 6ft wide spot! Doodles, I tried to stagger all of my deliveries (I have ordered from Palatine, Regan, DA, Chamblees, RVR, Heirloom, and RU) and pretty much don't plan on sleeping, eating, or bathing until I am done (although if this goes like my 2013 resolution, I am in trouble..). You and I both have a lot of work to do! Michael, I was way off for Tess. I assumed the HMF listing of 3'-8' would mean it would be closer to 3' in my zone so it definitely gets moved! Thank you! I was spacing 36" on average so most of these plans should work Lsst, when you say C.Marlowe has a delicate look does that mean you would suggest moving it toward the front of a bed to enjoy it versus further back? I had it spaced further back since the flower color is so "pow!" Thank you again everyone!

I'm a bit farther south than most of you on this thread, zone 8 in south central AL. I have planted in Dec. here and always plant through Nov. with no problems. Of course we don't have the freeze thaw situations that would cause dl's to heave here. Last year, I won a dl on the LA in Dec. It was one my daughter really wanted. The seller had to ship immediately. I got, it in late Dec. planted it in the ground and had tons of bloom on it last season. That's the latest I've ever planted a dl here. Like Ida, we've just had a much needed week of rainy weather, so I'm behind in my digging, dividing, and lining out, but will continue it as soon as the ground is dry enough to dig, even if I'm still at it in Dec. Anyone Growing _Butia eriospatha_ or _Butia yatay_ in Zone 7B?

Jay, i think its too early to know for sure if eriospatha is hardier than capitata, although i believe they handle wet a little better?. I know i am in a different zone to you but my eriospatha looks very green and lush and has grown loads this year compared to my yatay and capitata. I have to say i would be amazed (pleasantly) if it does turn out to be hardier, as it has more of a a butyagrus look about it. Cheers Vic

Oh yes! I planted some dill a couple weeks ago, which is just sprouting now. I also just planted some lettuce, spinach and cilantro. Green Goliath brocolli worked well for me last year until the deer did a number. Try a self-blanching cauliflower, otherwise you have to deal with tying the leaves up over it as it grows. My peas go in this weekend!

I'm zone 7b/8a TX. The asparagus I put out last year began to come out in February; the crowns DH planted in February are coming up, too.

We have been very warm--80's n 90's then down to 30's n 40's at night since February...a normal Spring for us! The wind has been awful and most of the ferns from last year's asparagus crowns are laid over...oh well, at least it is alive!

Mine hasn't poked up yet and I'm starting to worry about it. Seems it was up by now last year. However, with our wild temperature swings, perhaps the asparagus "knows better" than to come up yet.

I just picked my first harvest today, I'd gotten a random spear here or there before then. I think mine was later that typical due to my dogs running in there and "harvesting" for me! So I put up a short fence and I finally got a potful for me today.

Still waiting in western Oregon. I think I had to wait until almost May last year. Of course, snow in mid-April probably slowed things down a bit too!

Haven't seen a single spear yet, and I've been waiting anxiously as this would be my first year to harvest. We're in zone 5/6 and it's been a cool spring, so I hope it's just running late...

I have just a few starting to come up. I'm in the foothills in NC, and a pretty windy area. I think by next week, they will start to come on. Same as last few years.

Outside washington DC it was May when ours came up last year. We still do not have any either.

Mine came up two weeks ago. Frost got most of them. Just like last year, we are drowning. I've got over 2,000 onions, 50 lbs of seed potatoes, 50 strawberries, 340 asparagus crowns, etc., etc. sitting in my basement. Gotta love spring!

Since you made me curious, I went out and moved some of my mulch and found my first spear just poking out of the soil. But we're supposed to cool down again, so I'll probably still be waiting a while.

I have had a couple come up over the last couple days. Was a cold winter and pretty dry. Could be why it has taken so long, most years up in mid March.
