What is growing and planted in my Zone 5 garden.

I finally have some time to take a few pictures, We are really planting like crazy. It is time to move the movable buildings this weekend too! They will be filled with zucchini and pickling cucumbers. 350 Bell peppers will be planted on Sunday/Monday. Then we will try to start green beans outside by April 23rd. Zucchini to transplant along with slicing cucumber will be started on April 23rd too!

Sorry some of the pictures are hazy, it is smoke from burning pastures in the area and the camera was on a different setting.

There's no lack of support here! I'm in zone 5, and I'd be more than happy to help! There are many good points to gardening in the north, and a few bad ones... but aside from our cold winters, which are good for growing plants that require a cold dormancy, the other seasons are wonderful! Let us know when you get to zone 5, and we'll be here to help! I have rather shallow raised beds for veggies... I grow bush green beans, short carrots, tomatoes, pea pods, zucchini, cucumbers, onions, peppers, okra... you name it! Just remember that the edges, especially, will dry out faster... keep an eye on moisture content. It's entirely possible to grow kind of shallow... the roots simply go in a different direction under the soil, spreading out horizontally rather than growing quite so vertically.

Here is a garden under an ash tree in OH in it's even though the garden was just over a year old at the time, from previously being sparse grass. There are hostas, columbine, creeping phlox, Pulmonaria, Bergenia, Trillium, violets, Polemonium (jacob's ladder,) a few bulbs, Lamium, a little lilac, ready to be a tree if the ash got emerald beetle borers (I moved, remains a mystery,) and a few others I don't remember and can't see from this angle. 4" of mulch can retain moisture for weeks. Of your list, I would avoid the Vinca. Just too sprawling/spready to play nice with the other plants. In general, you don't want vines in a flower bed. Entities like Vinca or Ajuga that rapidly spread really do best in their own, well-enclosed space. Spreading through other more self-contained plants, these spreaders can make the whole thing look like a confused mess. But, like most things-gardening, this is subject to your personal opinion on the matter.

Hellebore - Do you grow them in your zone5/6 garden?

I recently posted this picture in the Shade combo thread. I think the foliage of these hellebores looks good even without bloom. The foliage also holds well from spring to late fall - this area still looks just as fresh as the picture right now in late October. The Corsican Hellebore is iffy in my zone but does well in this sheltered location against the house wall. The leaves in the upper left are from a burning bush. Upper right and bottom right, fine deep green foliage is H. foetidus (Stinking Hellebore), it has upright limey yellow green colored blooms, like a stalk sticking straight up. Middle is H. argutifolia (Corsican Hellebore). It has serrated shiny green foliage with a somewhat yellow caste to it compared to the others and small lime green flowers above the foliage that show well. It grows much larger and taller than the other two. H. orientalis (Lenten Rose) has dark matte green foliage and flowers like the others in very early spring here after the foliage has taken a pretty bad beating from our winter. As a result the flowers are more prominent that you might think. I also cut out some of the bad looking foliage to show off the flowers. I think I got the turtle at www.simplysucculents.com. (Actually, what I did was e-mail my mom the link with a note: "This would be a great present for me." Heh heh.) I brought it inside for the winter and I replanted with some new sedums this spring. Click on the "Our Garden Art" button. The geranium is "Alan Bloom." It starts blooming in Mid-May and blooms into the fall with deadheading. The peonies and irises in the spring are amazing. Later on in the season, the phlox david, butterfly bush, St. Johns Wort shrubs, salvia, sedum autumn joy, and purple dome asters bloom. I just put in a pink double knockout, too. And the bed is anchored at the end with an annabelle hydrangea. I also put in a few dahlias this year for the first time. And I planted climbing sweet peas and climbing nasturtium at the base of the colored spiral stakes. Last year I grew gourds on the spiral stakes, so I am trying something new--we'll see how it goes.

Hey Jrslick! What are you doing up at 0:38? Isn't that 12:38 am?
Everything looks great. I'm zone 3 in MN so probably 3-4 weeks behind you.
I have a couple of questions when you get time. I have had a high tunnel for just two years so some things I am uncertain about. For instance, our nighttime temps are 20 to 25 degrees this coming week. Last year was not this cold. I am considering if I could risk putting out tomatoes. The daytime temps in the high tunnel are very high because we are having sunshine. The soil temps are over 60 degrees. I am thinking about putting out the tomatoes, each with a gallon milk jug filled with water directly next to it. then running a line between the posts and tenting a piece of heavy remaay over them at night. I have some of the really heavy stuff, it's not very wide but would easily cover newly planted tomatoes. What has been your experience with night temps of 25 or so?
And I noticed your area for planting your peppers looks like you plant in wide beds. I usually plant a double row but was thinking of three rows this year. I hesitate because I am wondering if the center row would get shortchanged. How do you plant your peppers?
BTW there are a few people locally that have high tunnels but they either plant very late or use heat early. It's new in this area so there is not much info available.
One thing about gardening, there is never a lack of opportunity to continue learning.
If you are teaching also you must be exhausted by now. Bet you will be glad when school is out!

Actually that is 11:38, GW time is one hour ahead of me! I usually get to bet by 12:30-1:00 in March and April, not by choice, things have to get done!

I have taken well hardened off tomato plants down to around 20 degrees, with two layers of Agribond 19 and two liter bottles of HOT water. Just don't let the row cover touch the plants.

About the peppers, they are in a 3 foot wide bed. I will plant a double row, about 1 foot apart. I was thinking about a triple row, but I agree with you the middle row may get shaded.

Yes, I am teaching until the end of May.

Very nice photos. You definitely must put in a lot of time with that!

I'm guessing you must sell your product at a farmer's market? Between three of us in our house, we are lucky to eat enough peppers from eight pepper plants - let alone 350!

The new areas I pictured, a friend came out with a 4 foot tractor mounted tiller and tilled everything up. I will run my tiller down the rows where I will plant.

Everything is on raised beds, I do this to prevent erosion. Once I make raised beds, I only till the beds. I try really hard to keep them intact during the growing season.

I make my raised beds with a shovel and elbow grease. It is hard work and time consuming, but I only do it once every couple of years and then maintain them.

Bsntech: I sell at two farmers markets and I have an online CSA/Market with several other vendors. I also feed our family of 6.

Hello from Nebraska - zone 5 finger extending up into zone 4 territory here.
Growing outside - spinach, leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, summer crisp lettuce, onions, scallions (all previous a mix of direct seed and transplant), garlic (planted fall), snap peas (seeded in ground), broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, romanesco cauliflower, baby bok choi, kohlrabi (started indoors), golden beets, swiss chard (last 2 not up yet). Not planted in garden yet are parsley and leeks (leeks got a very late start). Indoors tomatoes and bell peppers (tonight potted up into 2 inch pots).

I took pictures of mine tonight but can't figure out how to post using Droid. I use a Troybilt horse and have so far spinach, lettuce, onions, broccoli, cabbage, beans, radish, potatoes, strawberries, rhubarb, asparagus, beets, peas, carrots, and have 70 each of tomatoes and peppers hardening off for now. I live on 22 acres I bought a year ago and would love to get as big and organized as your setup Jay. It truly is the best I've seen around here. I've been to clay center several times.
