heat wave!!!!!!!!!

Man, it has been in the 70's then 50's the past 2 days....90'S for the next 5 days or more starting tommorrow here in Mass.

My poor Citrus Trees!!!!lol

and here in the PNW, we're usually having high 60's and low 70's by now..but not this year..

it's rain, rain and more rain...good for plants but not for summer plans..hgh 50's and low 60's..

. . . And here in Raleigh NC we blew through our record high, topping out at 99 F! This is 15 F above average! It ain't suppose to get this hot for another 5 or 6 weeks! Forecast highs for the next 3 days are 100+ F.

My container veggies are not doing too well either. Weather went from upper 70's to upper 90's in about 2 days. Other then the peppers, the rest are not doing too well (tomatoes, okra, pole beans).

Grrrr . . . Between soil problems and the weather, this has been a frustrating growing season so far for me.

We are back to normal temps and the hydrangeas are happy! lol The embothrium/firebush is not blooming and has never even show promise! It will get much more sun this year after trimming the firs - but we will see. I might go and see if it is trying to bloom. lol Cooper - water the heck out of the hydrangeas! If you have decent drainage don't worry about over watering. The only spot I could grow a hydrangea in my northern California garden was in a running creek! I regularly plop hydrangeas still in pots into a bucket or pan of water and leave them there to recover. People talk about root rot, but that is soil born and does not pose a problem in water. I have left plants - in containers and bare root - in water for weeks and they thrived just fine. I presently have more than 60 in my garden and propagate tons every year. We have no irrigation and hand water everything. But, this is in the PNW! Keep that in mind - and hot temps here are sporadic and the humidity is low and our nights cool off usually down to the 50 - 60's. That is the description for the Marine Climate. Northern CA is Mediterranean Climate! Fossils of hydrangeas can be found in the PNW showing that they have been growing here for millions of years.

The tomatoes appear to have sunscald (that parchment colored section), which opened the damaged sections up to further issues which led to the squishiness (rot). It would have been a result from sudden exposure to unusually heat and sun. The flowers were also lost to the heat and the shock to the plant (they don't like change). You should get more flowers, and the new tomatoes should be fine.

The thing about needing coolant (refrigerant) is that's not necessary unless there's a leak in the system. Refrigerant doesn't wear out or get used up such that it must be changed or refilled. A tiny leak that doesn't cause an adverse effect until enough leaks out over a couple/few years is somewhat less of a concern, but it's still a leak that shouldn't be there.

That might be possible. Out in the open, the air temperature is the air temperature, whether you're under shade or not. The sun doesn't heat up the air directly. But if the sun is shining on something, the air temperature close to it could be elevated. But if the out-in-the-open air temperature is already too high, shade isn't going to help. Here, in the summer, the nighttime temperatures (75-80F) are already too high to permit tomato fruiting, so shade won't make any difference. That's because of the humidity. But if you're in a drier part of the country, your nighttime temperatures may fall low enough that daytime shade will keep them low for a while. So, it depends.

Here in Wisconsin it has been rain, wind, rain. 70s and 80s. I couldn't believe I was actually getting worried about fungal problems on plants this early in the season.

Lost a couple seedlings to the wind shearing the stems, but nothing too bad.

The rain came down so hard a couple days ago that I actually had a blueberry shrub (in the ground) partially uprooted. It is on a slope and the night before I scratched some sulfur and nitrogen into the soil and that was enough to let the water do the rest. 'Amazing' season so far. Always is :)

Here in northeast TN, we have reached a record high of 103 for two days.

In the 10 yrs I have lived here, it has never hit 100. It does reach into the 90s, but that is in AUGUST not June!
