Tomato tops turning brown during heat wave

Greg Paulson

Hello, I'm wondering if our brown squishy tomato tops are the result of a recent heatwave.

A week ago everything looked great; tomatoes growing larger, but mostly still green. They were left on the drip system and neglected somewhat when our daughter was born.

It's usually a high of about 75 F outside, but yesterday it got up to about 100 F. When I checked to see if they needed water, I saw that the tops of about half were brown and squishy on top. Others were overly ripe on top, but still green on the bottom.

All ten plants of various varietals have the same issue, and all lined up along the house facing south. It got very warm up against the house, and I'm wondering if that contributed to the problem.

Several blossoms dried up, too. I hope our season isn't ruined!

Any thoughts or suggestions on a remedy?

Thanks so much!

-Greg
